camshaft & springs?

is there any special tips as to installing one? i found one probably wont actually buy it for two weeks.. so it'll be here in 3... so just curious if i need to get any special lube or something for when its installed

also when i was at CT getting the gear puller many times i saw they have a valve spring compressor... do i need one of those to install new valve springs with the cam? and any tips for that as well...

use assemble lube...if it's a new cam it might come wiht it but you need to lube up the lobes...and I've never installed a cam on a OHC design but I'd imagine you dont' need a valve spring compressor....I knwo you need them in flat heads but were aren't in teh 1950's anymore so....

the CT one won't work for a honda engine anyways... and yes, you need assembly lube

yes you need a valve spring compressor, unless you plan on compressing the spring by hand to remove the retainers. All you need is the clamp style valve spring compressor as it just clamps the bottom of the valve and top of the spring to expose the retainers. And yes the canadian tire one will do as there has been no change from a flat head to a honda head in how the valve spring works. and be carefull when removing the springs as some of the higher rate high rpm range springs will have spring rates of 400 pounds, and when one of those gets loose after being compressed look out!!!!

blk93si and a few others have found out the hard way that the CT spring compressors don't fit in the confined space of a 16V honda. I think airfalcon also knows this firsthand. do a search here, I know there was at least one thread about it in the last 2 years.

You have to take the head off or your valves will drop into the cylinders when you remove the retainers on the valve springs. Plus you wont be able to compress the spring with out taking the head off.

Yeah it could be interesting, and just think when you take the head off you get to put a nice new gasket on as well.
