Pardon my ignorance, but what type of gains can you expect by installing a cam into that same engine? Are there any downfalls…i.e. reliability issues? Oh, and what's the aprox cost?

If you run a motor harder than what its designed for, you shorten the life of he engine.

Cams can cost anywhere from a few hundred to a thousand.

gains are variable upon application.

reliability.... well kinda sorta

the cam spins around and the cam followers ride on it under the tension of valve springs... get high enough in the rpm range and the tension of the springs will be overcome by the inertia of the accelerated valvetrain causing valve float, and possibly piston slap. Now, you throw in a cam with higher lift and diff't duration now you're ******* with higher powers.... you are prolly clueless as to what you've actually done to your motor and your ignorance can lead to failure cuz you've reduced the safety zone between when the valve gets out of the way of the piston, and the piston coming up. Now your valve lash becomes way critical cuz valve float is more probable now. So you have to upgrade valve springs and retainers... now the followers put greater force on the cam, causing slightly accelerated wear. If the cam is some cheap regrind, you may get a couple of years out of that cam before it's garbage. Not all regrinds are bad - just the cheap ones Anyways, most cams are pretty safe it the right things are upgraded and good quality components are used. The gain is that you now have a more optimized set of lobes instead of quiet smooth performance like Honda intended, the new cam is hopefully optimized for performance, period. Depending on the cam you can affect midrange torque, or high end horsepower. Most Honda cams focus on high end horsepower. So on a Honda, you'll prolly only gain from 6000 rpm to redline with a cam like this. Of course if you have included boost on your motor, then the cam can be tuned for the pulses of a pressurized motor, and this cam would be quite diff't from an NA cam. As for the numbers of lift, degrees of lobe separation, and duration.... don't ask, I never bothered to learn cuz I never plan on making my own camshaft. I don't know how each number affects the breathing of a motor, that part is more art and witchcraft Manufacturers just make a pile of diff't cams and test them out.

^^ very good information although there are quite a few cams which make power before 6000rpms.
To optimise your cam, cam gears are very good and so would a custom ecu.
ALso there are different stage cams. Stage 1-2-3 as far as I know. Regrinds are your own cam reground more agressivly.

Ive heard of a stage 2 cam with custon ecu and cam gear. I H E producing 30hp.

On another note...............some please suggest a cam for me! and the cheapest source

For cam suggestions,

there are a few oldies like Gude/Bullfrog, Skunk 2, and of course an old hot rod favourite Competition Cams.... and I would think JG/Edelbrock would have something as well. Also check out ENDYN and definitely speak with Leitner cuz I know they have some kickass cams in stock.

But I have to tell ya, unless you drive over 6000 rpm often, you may be disappointed with this upgrade, but frankly when doing an NA SOHC you'll get a lot of these little upgrades that at the end will total up to a screamer. It won't feel any faster, but if done right I'll pull away on quite a few cars.
