Cam Gains

I was wondering what kind of gains would I feel if i ot a set of CTR cams?

bbarbulo 09-Sep-2003 10:28 AM

one MILLION horsepower

imported_eth0r 09-Sep-2003 11:12 AM

what motor do u have?

bbarbulo 09-Sep-2003 11:14 AM

asking a question like that, it's safe to say B16A

imported_eth0r 09-Sep-2003 11:19 AM

in that case..i heard its something like 5-15hp

bbarbulo 09-Sep-2003 11:28 AM

haha... that's a BIG range eth0r... 15 hp is hella more than 5 hp.

Yo, basically, don't bother if your motor is not built for sustained 8000 rpm, which the USDM B16A really isn't. It's only at 5500 plus that the CTR cams shine and make more power. Your gains will depend on what other mods you have and how well tuned your motor is. If the fueling is off, your motor will fall flat on it's face.

Atomic EG 09-Sep-2003 11:58 AM

BB..Its a JDM B16a there is no fuel cut thanks to the wonderfull work of HyperDuck.......I plan on doing some work to the head ie port and polish in the winter maybe even a better intake manifold.

bbarbulo 09-Sep-2003 12:26 PM

i see... does it run mint... all the sensors report properly? If all is well, and the engine gets healthy compression... and you have the normal breathing improvements done, and a bigger throttle body... then head work is in order. Question becomes, do you drive it like you stole it (6000+ rpm range) often enough to take advantage of the high-rpm cams like CTR to make the huge $$$price worthwhile. :shrugs:

bbarbulo 09-Sep-2003 12:27 PM

if you get slighly low compression, it would be a great time to do a B18 or B20 buildup since you already have the rest of the components, and a CRV block can be had for cheap.

Atomic EG 09-Sep-2003 12:37 PM

Well bb I was going to do an ls/vtec swap in the winter but other things came up so the money was spent..... For now I need alittle more punch in it till I can find the time and money....I love to spin the car up to 5-6 grand cause I love the sound it makes so I would take advantage of that as often as possible.

bbarbulo 09-Sep-2003 12:42 PM

that's cool... what I'm wondering is if you understand the implications of using your motor as a race motor... race motors get rebuilt... with great frequency. So it depends.

I should make it clear for everyone, big motors last long ceteris paribus. Small, powerful motors are efficient and are much better for fuel conservation that is so essential in endurance racing, but it suffers in longevity since it's placed under great stress to make that power while hauling 2100 lbs of steel with it. Motorcycles are small and light... so it's easy. With a car, torque is pretty important in order to move that weight. Think about you peddaling a bicycle... you can put it in low gear and peddle the crap out of your legs :p (high revving motor), or you can use more MUSCLE in your legs in a higher gear and NOT peddle as much, but use more torque from your muscles. Get what I'm saying??

Atomic EG 09-Sep-2003 12:47 PM

For sure. What I am going to use the car for is my daily driver.

bbarbulo 09-Sep-2003 12:50 PM

I would have to recommend building a bigger displacement bottom end... whether you bore out the current B16 block and stroke it, or get a new bottom end and have it machined for the VTEC goodness.

imported_snotz 09-Sep-2003 03:13 PM

nice car.....your car looks familiar

egproject 09-Sep-2003 04:05 PM

i recently just put a 01ITR (same as CTR) intake cam alone in my 2g jdm b16a.

you can feel a little buttdyno gain but then again my car isn't fully tuned.

CTR/00+ITR cams are def. worth the upgrade. oem reliability with halfdecent power gains.

or..if u have the xtra $$$, go skunk2 stage 1's with springs/retainers.

imported_eth0r 09-Sep-2003 04:59 PM

skunk2 stage 1s are equiv to the ctr cam.. from what i hear

dingus8 09-Sep-2003 08:56 PM

OHHHH GOODDDDD!!!! WRONG INFORMATION!!!!

first off ctr cams are not "race" cams they are the best bang because they keep your midrange strong compared to stage 1's....you might see 5-10 whp dependign on tuing...ctr cams are a great addition and aren't that aggressive....haha spend moeny on building a bottom end as oppose to ctr cams....:haha: and what woud you be using to take advantage of this high compression and diplacement.....ahhhhh cams....ctr at the least....hahaha what a joke misinforming to the max....cams are the heart of your motor and are where you will se hp gains from...if you "build" you bottom end guess what you need soem mroe aggressive cams and ctr's aren't that aggressive compared to a jun 3....they are reliable as **** cause they are oem honda they are a good gain for the b16's weak cams.....dotn' listen to anythign that has been said in this tread so fare....all dreamers...."build your bottom end instead" hahaha $3000 dollars easy later you still needs cams....this is jsut gross how soemone could misinform soemone so bably and talk otu there ass.........sick sick sick...good luck man the ctr cmas are a nice upgrade that you can run opn stock valve train up untill 8200 then you will need to get the itr valve train to see 8500...they dotn' make power past that so no need to spin higher....get adjustable gears to tuen them on a dyno for best results....have fun and good luck.

Thanks for the info dingus.

dingus8 09-Sep-2003 10:41 PM

no prob sorry about the spelling it's kinda shitty:bling:

imported_sketch 10-Sep-2003 12:31 AM

how about GSR cams ?
is there even a difference there?
