cai worth it with winter???

hey i got a 98 civic si
i want to put a cold air intake on it, but will the snow/ice damage anything in the winter, if so will a breather help?
and does the breather take away the whole point of having a cai???
should i maybe go SHORT RAM THEN?

I don't get why people are afraid of driving with a CAI in winter, you realize you need to like fully submerse the filter for you to hydrolock it. Like white92 said keep your wheel liner in and you'll be fine.

if people are that scared, most cai systems are cut in the middle of the tubing, so take out the bottom extension in the winter, and put the filter inside the engine bay.

but, unless your running a big beefy b18 or h22, your engine probably wont have the 'sucking' power to vaccuum up enuff water to do make it to the im

I believe the purpose in the breather is so that hot gasses/oil do not recirculate themselves back into your intake. I believe you can also put an oil catch can in lieu of a breather to catch all the bad stuff.

by breather I think he means bypass valve?? against hydrolocking

if you do mean breather, it's a violation of emissions and environmental codes, and results in about a $500 ticket I think. AND best of all, it's bloody useless. if everything works fine, it just takes oil vapour from the crankcase and sticks it into the intake tract so it's sucked in and burned up at no cost to the environment. there is no power loss or gain to be had there.

Bruno, on the turbo setups i've seen, it seems that everyone is running a breather. Could you vent it back into the intake? If not, what would you do? Oil catch can just so its less conspicuous? Or just stick on a silicon tube and make it vent somewhere where it can't be seen?

Well i have had my cai for about 2 years now. Used it through winter and never had a problem. I've even driven through some big puddles (cause its inevitable) and still no problem. Honestly i think a bypass valve would be a waste of money cause unless you plan to go muddin in ur car i don't think you will be going through any deep enough puddles to necessitate a bypass valve.
