Cai

I was thinking about getting one cause i had one on my car before but am not too sure about the legal matters in which i might hit into if i install one.

I know since it's not in the actual engine bay it's not considered an open air breather but.....was wondering how many if any people have had problems with them and if they are legit to put in your car.

Thanks

so you really did buy a civic then.....any how yes they are kinda if a cop is a dick he could say it's modified from stock blah blah blah...but whatever jsut get one...or make your own which is what I woudl do..ghetto style

imported_esp 07-Aug-2003 10:12 PM

wait, CAI are not legal? you can get ticketed for having one? I thought that as long as the filter was SAE/DOT it was all good.

imported_gatherer 07-Aug-2003 10:17 PM

I didn't know about a ticket for a CAI....

and I guess the cop that looked under my hood when I had it on the car didn't know either....

imported_zexhuffer 07-Aug-2003 10:34 PM

I know for a fact that if you have an open air filter or open breather under your hood you will be ticketed by mto for sure.

i saw 4-5 vehicle emission enforcement cars today

Quick_CX 07-Aug-2003 11:07 PM

my aem cai has a CARB sticker on it....meaning it passed cali emmision standards...so does my msd ingition and dc header...dun that make it legal?

imported_gatherer 07-Aug-2003 11:07 PM

ohhhh great here we go again ... ok ...

explination...

if you have a filter on the end of the cold air or short ram intake you will not get a ticket...

you will however get a ticket if you enjoy putting your car through hell by, instead of having the rubber hose connected from the crankcase (PVC valve) to the intake pipe. you decide to put one of those small air intake looking filters on the end of the PVC valve ... thats not a good thing to do because one it allows the oil fumes to escape into the environment and also doesn't allow the valve to work right (which depends on the negative pressure it would have placed on it if the pipe was connected) ....

does everyone get it now?

in california it does :p (I refer to my post above) it's only illegal if you do what I posted above

don't thank me yet I've been told I'm wrong on this issue ... and that they are looking for the laws to prove it ....

imported_Joker 08-Aug-2003 12:51 PM

so breathers are bad, nevermind the legality of them but are they bad for the car?

imported_gatherer 08-Aug-2003 05:22 PM

yes they are .... they don't allow a negative pressure to be applied to the "breather" side of the PVC valve.... messing up it's whole function

vanman 08-Aug-2003 06:32 PM

I don't think it's the "negative pressure" issue but rather the fact that you would be able to vent crankcase vapours to the atmosphere instead of into the air intake where they would be ingested into the cylinders.

just for the record, that's PCV valve...

*Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve*

:)

well I'd continue to try and explain how I think it all works on here .... however I won't for a few reasons:

1) I'm lazy

2) I can't take the time to write the essay I can explain it better while under the hood of a car

3) I could care less

nice attitude!

imported_gatherer 08-Aug-2003 07:01 PM

well I'm serious.... I don't have the energy to try and explain my thoughts when about 1 minute of under hood pointing would deliver to someone clearly what I'm thinking ......

it's all good though

Buff 'n Stuff 08-Aug-2003 07:59 PM

so you're saying that gatherer has better things to do than post on the TCC forum?

imported_gatherer 08-Aug-2003 08:26 PM

no gatherer .. just can't find the words to use to post his explination on the board... I'll show you at the meet tonight what I mean and then you can decide whether you can post it up ...

yes I'm giving away posting oppertunities
