A/C = Lack of performance...Drastic?

Hi guys,

Was my first time driving my 93 Civic with JDM D15B engine with the A/C on.

I was surprised because the damn car lost lots of power to do anything.

I'd have to press the gas pedal down pretty far to have the car kick in and speed up.

It was pretty amuzing to say the least. My father said its normal for small cars, let alone a 1.5L car. He says a 2.2L+ car has less power loss with A/C on. With small cars, its expected.

But is it really normal? What about other's on this board. Do you notice this too?

It was my first time driving with A/C on in my Civic and it caught me by surprise. Yes I'm a noob.

Yes, it is normal. That a/c with 150 psi on the high side takes around 8-10 hp to turn. Now in a 90whp car, thats a drastic change.

it does create some power loss... but the more hp you have, the less power loss you'll feel because a high hp car is still relatively faster than most cars on the road even with a/c on hahaha...

took my ac off and had to adjust the idel, because it was so damn high not running that extra pully. same with ps, the more u take off the less pullys there is to run.

I remember on my D16Y8 I would have the A/C on full blast and I swear I lost so much power that I would be getting on the on ramp and I'd be flooring it and it took forever to reach to like 5500 rpm....turn it off and it seems so quick lol

Same here. With AC off I can go uphill in fifth gear without a problem, but with AC on I have to switch to fourth, and sometimes third for the really steep hills.

Ya this is what I figured if I were to remove my AC and PS. Haha, the more pulleys, the more loss there is I suppose. Too much stress through the whole system.
