A/C = engine struggle

Engine: 1.5 Liter 16 valve... :(
Transmission: 5spd
KM's on motor...183 000, still a virgin in honda books.

i've noticed it more this summer than last. When I turn on my AC my engine is chugging, it feels like its on its last breath all the time, especially going over hills and accelerating. Last summer it was fine if i had the AC on.

I notice it shakes a lot more than usual too, inside the car..at idle my stick shift is jumbling around like crazy (when AC is on)

The motor runs fine when the AC is off

any suggestions as to why this is happening

My car is the same. 148,000 stock D16Y7.

imported_loudsubz 07-Jul-2005 10:52 PM

mine 2

H22 as well

my dads 5.7l HEMI has no diff with it on, hmm Hemi swap in a civic?? lol

Nova_Dust 07-Jul-2005 11:46 PM

Now that's call a swap.

the engine kind of bogs down a bit when you turn the ac on but it should go back to normal after the initial hit. maybe alternator or battery?

Wondering if you guys are maybe feeling a possible misfire??? Although the OBD 2 cars should set a misfire code and CEL.
With the extra load of the AC a weak or old ignition system will really show. Check wires, plugs etc.

Just a thought.

Nova_Dust 08-Jul-2005 09:53 AM

My wires, rotor cap are not changed, since day one. I think the spark plugs are changed? I forgot.

No CEL. But what I usually do is turn on AC when the car is up at a speed, like 60km.

Thanks for the tip. I do think I need a decent tune up.

Younes Si 08-Jul-2005 11:00 AM

that's why i never turn it on...
we have a 1.5 - 2.2 4 cyl cars it can't handel both so, just roll down both windows and up goes the sun/moon roof

and a tune up ain't going to do sihit if you think it's not going to bog

Mine doesn't bog ... just goes through some serious gas :(

imported_BoOsTd 08-Jul-2005 02:26 PM

mine takes an initial hit when i turn it on, then goes back to normal...slight increase in fuel consumption and slight power loss... but it doesnt get overall boggy persay...

stock94block 08-Jul-2005 06:37 PM

ill have to do a tune up, i think it would help the boggyness since last summer it wasnt this bad.

If i turn it on it takes an initial hit, but doesnt seem to recover..it just slugs around...almost to the point of stalling

and it chugs gas like a disgrace..i could get 600-700 kms on a tank w/o ac....with ac full driving i wouldnt count on over 400kms.

600-700 kms city driving? you sure about that

imported_winner007 08-Jul-2005 11:36 PM

How do u get 600-700 on a city driving? I want to buy your car then haha. What engine do u have? Don't tell me it is a V-tec engine too? That's like impossible. Do u have a accord gas tank or something bigger? I get around 350km on mine and if all highway driving i can just make it to around 400km per tank and i beat the **** out of my car and also i have automatic. I know 5 spd u get more, but not 600-700 on a city.

If your A/C does that when it turns on, it could be your mass air flow sensor. That's the 1 on top of the air filter housing. I can't guarantee it is the mass air flow sensor, but that is 1 reason i can think of.

thanks man i will check that out too, im starting to put together parts for a complete tune-up when my next oil change comes in about 1000kms.

as for the mileage, i kid you not. It's not a vtec engine, its the D15B7 to be exact with a stock 45L tank. I've always been able to get that kind of mileage from it. And you only get 400kms out of your car? I have a buddy with a 91 (think) Integra, B18A TURBO, full interior and runs 8psi on the street..he gets 400kms on that, but on premium for obvious reasons.

Driving habits are key, I am a slow/relaxed driver.

Now, there have been times where i would give my car a beating, taking it up to 5-6 grand, pedal to the floor constantly..and i would only get mid-400kms out of it.

again, driving habits make a world of difference

My engine D16Y7 use to struggle a lot as well before but I've installed new ground wires and voltage stabilizer and its a lot better now w/ the A/C on. Car actually has a bit more of kick when the A/C is on but I usually only turn it on once I'm up to speed when it comes to highway driving.
