Buying New Exhaust Manifold

Hello.

Some of you may remember my old post where I found out I had a crack in my exhaust manifold.

Well, I temporarily welded it, and now it is time to replace it as the crack is getting bigger and the sound getting worse.

The crappy thing is that my manifold is connected to my cat and Honda wants something like $650 for an OEM replacement. Looking on ebay, I found an aftermarket one for $180US + shipping/duties. I have posted the link below. My car is a 96 Civic CX Hatch 1.6L. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if this manifold/cat will be okay in my car (and will it pass emissions?).

Also, if anyone knows a place in Canada/Ontario where I can get this for about the same price, I'd love to know. Thanks guys.

Ebay - Exhaust Manifold

It says shipping to the states only guy! Ever think of doing a Y8 manifold instead? The Y7's are crappy (had two crack on me). Just a thought.

yup hes right do the y8 manifold. Thats what i did after mine cracked too :(

Double_B 18-Nov-2005 12:10 AM

what I did as well, then my piston ring went on me

I agree with brian and kwikb16a2.. i've heard of the y7's cracking a lot.

Don't go to honda for an OEM exhaust mani+cat. You will most likely find one on sale in the classifieds.

Thanks for the replies! I've never heard of putting y8 on a y7 until now. From what I just googled, it looks like the y7 manifold is separate and I'd also need to buy a y7 cat. Is this true?

I am really looking for my least expensive way out of this for now. Is there any way I can disconnect the manifold I have now from the cat and somehow weld or bolt a new y7 manifold onto the cat? If possible, will it last for at least a year? I'm pretty low on cash right now b/c I'm in school and want to find the cheapest way to fix this thing, but at the same time, not make matters worse.

What is the best budget option? How much would this y8 conversion cost?

Thank you!

Try to find an entire Y8 exhaust. Manifold, cat, midpipe, etc. For $650 from Honda you could buy an entire D16Y8 engine.

If he doesn't have the cat, you can always get an aftermarket one. That's what I did. And if he has the 02 Sensor, that would be bonus, cause if he doesn't, you will need to extend your secondary 02 sensor

Alright, thanks guys. Keep me posted viper :). I'll also look around and see what I can find. If anyone has any suggestions as to where to look, that'd be good.

Also, will I see benefits (besides a crack :P) will I see with a d16y8 manifold and cat? What price do you think I'm looking at for the cat, manifold, and 02 extension? Thanks.

Biggest difference I noticed was the sound of the engine and a bit better response when you hit the gas. Sound in my car got deeper. It was nice!

Just buy a header and a aftermarket cat. For example to price things high Header Hedman/Chikara $250.00 + Magnaflow Cat $100.00 + Labour $150 =$500.00 now go gitr done!

kwikb16a2 18-Nov-2005 05:23 PM

jus to give ya an idea on how much mine costed. Y8 manifold- $40, Nearly new RSX cat- 40, labour to install- $100. So in total it costed me 180 bucks to get it all done. Thats the cheapest way

That's reasonable! Would it work on my car though? Right now, it is all one piece (cat and manifold as one); so what changes would need to be made? Surely it can't fit the exact same, can it?

imported_viper 19-Nov-2005 10:01 AM

I do appologize...all I have left is the downpipe...remember now that I sold the exhaust manifold to a guy with an el....if interested...please let me know...

Yes it can. Other than the Manifold, the only diff between the Y7 and Y8 is the Y8 engine is vtec. Also the Intake manifold is different. Anyways, the changes needed would be the downpipe along with extending the 02 sensor and a bit of modifying the exhaust pipe between the downpipe and the cat, I believe it needs to be extended just a little.

It will work. Lots of people do it, I had it done on my car.

If anyone has one for sale or knows where I can get one, please post in my Want To Buy thread.

imported_96hatch 22-Nov-2005 11:23 PM

D16Y8 Head (approx.18k) $200 OBO

Is this reasonable? It's in TCC's For Sale forum... http://torontocivics.com/tccforums/s...threadid=98866

Double_B 22-Nov-2005 11:25 PM

It's a vtec head, not a exhaust manifold and for a vtec head, it's not too bad of a price for the amount of K, if that is correct.

imported_96hatch 22-Nov-2005 11:31 PM

Ohh, okay. The search coninues... what do you think of the ones on ebay? Are they cheap unreliable or do they do the same trick?
