burning MAD oils :(
hey all... need some help here. Just swapped a d16z6 into my ride (vtec finally!) but it's burning like crazy! checked the smoke test.. not blue, BLACK!when i rev it hard, otherwide no noticable smoke. I've got a residue ALL over my bumper. Any ideas what's gone so i can go scream at the guys that put it in?
thanks! |
Oil is leaking (probaby due to a bad valve guide or seal) from the head into your exhaust ports.... most of it gets burned off as the hot exhaust gases pass through the system. That black stuff is the remains of the burnt oil and get stucck to the bumper as it exits the exhaust.... how much oil are you burning?
a lot! like a litre a week
That's alot of oil. It could also be a leak in a piston ring... or a combination of both. Either way you're looking at $$$ to fix. Where did you get the motor?
exotic touch designs did the swap for me.. was a weak old d15 before.. now it's a powerful, but oil burning d16 :P
This isn't an install problem, I would bitch at whoever sold you the motor, not who did the swap. Cuz it sounds like the motor was already cooked when you got it.
i feel your pain my friend :(
they got the engine for me too
are there any drips of puddles under the car? That might help to check if you've got possibly a few leaks. a litre a week is hella lot and i'd at least make sure you stock up a few extra bottle of whatever oil you're using and keep it in the trunk. a litre a week sounds more like a leak then just burning ...
what kinda mileage on the motor? |
Checking for leaks is not a bad idea., but he does have crap all over his bumper, so it's definitely burning at least some oil. One litre a week is alot, but it's not an insane amount. You can easily burn 3-4L in one hour of driving if the rings/seals are really messed up.
no spots under the car.. put cardboard down to check that..
so what are ya thinking? my valve timins is toasted? seal? rings? need to know what to yell at ETD about when I go up

Compression test it. If the readings are fine across all cylinders you probaby have a valvetrain problem.
good point jugglez :P (slaps myself across the face with the powder too)
where can i get that done w/o paying a fortune? |
A compression test doesn't take more than 5 minutes. Take it into any shop, or you can rent the tester from CT and do it yourself. Go to www.c-speedracing.com - they have an article that details how to do it the right way.

oh sweet!! thanks man!
