brake swap question...

ok next mod on my list is brake swap. how big are the discs on the 92-95 coupe? i hear they're bigger than the ones on the hb? also are the rear discs the same as the gsr rear discs? how big are the gsr discs? front and rear? i'm thinking about my options and the only thing i'm not going is ITR 5 lug. not only does it make my car a theft magnet but i'll need new rims and tires which is too much for my budget right now. what would be the next best option? what kind of mc/bb combos can i use? i know the 91 ex 15/16 is a direct swap but what else?

AFAIK there are two standard sizes on Honda Civic-based vehicles. 9.4 inch and 10.2 inch are the two standard sizes for the front. All rear disks are the same on the Civic, del Sol, Integra (excl ITR).

The SiR and GSR for sure have the bigger 10.2 inch brakes. I have no idea about other models.

Also, for best braking performance, look into ITR sized brakes that use the Accord Wagon/ITR calipers and I think Prelude re-drilled rotors.

Check out fastbrakes.com for brake packages.

As for MC choices, you want a minimum of 15/16, but bigger IS better. Any OEM caliper is okay with 15/16. I used that size to run 4 piston calipers for a while, and it was great. I recently upgraded to a 1 inch, but not cuz I had to.

Boosters are pretty much all the same by design, but diff't fitment. The only reason to swap your booster is because you want to install a MC which would not normally bolt up (which i had to do).

what type of MC did you go with? and how much of a difference did you notice? btw are those prices american? that adapter kit for the eg seems like a pretty good deal. would it be ok to run si rear discs and a 11" front brake kit?

bbarbulo 22-Jul-2005 06:29 PM

yeah american prices.

mine is a Nissin 1 inch MC. dunno what car it came from. i got it in exchange for some help with a brake swap.

si rear discs + 11 inch front is fine. but post a link to the kit you are looking at. some of those kits are kinda ghay.

the kit is maybe for now. if i don't buy a complete gsr suspension off a guy then i'm going to go this route. i don't know which kit to pick from. the one that comes without the calipers are 270 and the complete one is a whopping 550!

start with the GSR upgrade. Torrey I think has one for sale. I was actually REALLY happy with my SiR brake upgrade. The only reason I went even further with Wilwood was for the "WOW!!!11eleven!!!thatsumtitesh!t" factor. besides that it's not necessary.

there is a lot that goes into a brake system. tossing on a pile of random parts from some internet site won't outperform OEM brakes. you have to consider line pressure and volume, weight of your rotors, parts availability for service down the road, etc etc.

OEM brakes are easy to service and care for.

also, braking consists of serveral components... clamping pressure of your calipers, distance of the caliper from the centerline/axle, pad material/friction factor, rotor metal hardness, brake fluid dry boiling point, heat capacity of your rotors, and the heat tolerance of your pads. Honda spent a pile of money developing a system for the GSR. fastbrakes did not. All they do is relocate your stock DX caliper farther away and give you a set of fancy looking rotors. This is NOT by ANY means a 'big brake kit'. It gets you big brakes, but its far from performing like big brakes should. Also, invest in good tires before you upgrade your brakes much further.

I recommend GSR knuckles and calipers, and new OEM rotors and pads for the GSR, along with some braided steel lines, and Ford brake fluid from the Ford dealership (tell them you have a Focus SVT), then a 15/16 master cylinder, a 4040 prop valve, and whatever rear disk brakes you can pick up. don't forget braided lines in the back too. Get Russell or Earl's braided lines, don't buy junk.

alright i'm most likely going to pick the gsr brake swap off the guy which includes the mc and bb. this is coming out of a 2001 gsr. so i should get new rotors, brake pads, and lines eh? ahh so much $$. and how come ford brake fluid? thanks for the input btw, i appreciate it. is it ok to pick up brembo blanks?

bbarbulo 22-Jul-2005 10:00 PM

01 rotors and pads should still be good, but just inspect and measure them. then mount them up and see if they are warped or not. it's not the best way to go, but it should be okay and could save you some money. if you were a paid member, you could get OEM rotors and pads for cheap y0.

ford brake fluid has a higher boiling point than most other fluids.

you will have to swap the booster too in order to use that MC... the booster is a lil bit of a bitch to swap only cuz the 4 nuts are way up there under the dash.

my mechanic will be doing the job for me so it should be ok. thanks a lot for the input..
