brake service need help with parts
hi all, first of all, thanks for all the help
my car is 1996 honda civic ex auto w/abs, i bought this car for almost 2 years havent change break pad/rotor/drum n break fluid. now it's time to change brakes, need to change front rotors/pads and rear drums/shoes it's for daily driving to school/work so i dont really need high end ones which parts would you guys recommand me? buy it from dealer? around how much? buy it from cdn tires? buy aftermarket stuffs? i got a quote today at an auto shop, it's pair of pad/rotors, drums/shoes, about $200 parts + 80 labour is that good deal? thanks |
that quote is probably for some really cheap parts, decent quality parts should cost roughly around 300 - 350, these are the parts you wont need to change for a while, if you dont mind changing brakes every year get economy rotors and decent pads.

it hard to say if thats a good deal... what kind of parts ??? "white box crap" ? I mean for your purpose white box parts are good enough but they are very cheap. less then 200.
to give you an idea I payed 30 dollars for some blank rotors (white box) and 35 for some napa premium pads. so the front was only 65 dollars and I very happy with the result. To do your rear drums all you need is a shoes and spring kit. Im not sure how much they go for but Im certain its not 135. If you are handy and you have tools I suggest you try to do your own brakes... its a good thing to know and will save you lots of money throughout your life. All you need is a 17mm to take the caliper off, 10mm or big C clamp depending how you wanna compress the piston and a big phillips bit like a number 3 I think. Its pretty easy and a good learning experience.. expect 1 hour on the first side and like 15 minutes on the second one. good luck |
280 is a good deal. Do it.
I wouldnt recommend you doing the brakes yourself if you have never attempted to do brakes. Stripped set screws (which i dont even bother with anymore I just use a punch to hit them out now) and over torqued saddle bolts is not fun. And i'm not even going to attempt to take about drum brakes, if you are in-experienced... good luck.. it took my awhile before I could do drum brakes quickly and correctly |

doesnt matter if you can find a write up or not. Some people just can't wrench. If you haven't done brakes before I wouldnt recommend it doing it by yourself.

$280 is a good price....go to honda, see what they'd charge, you'll laugh and/or cry. But have you had your brakes checked? Do you REALLY need rear shoes and drums? |
drums CAN be re-serviced a bunch of times. I have 140K on my rear drums and they are original... and still in fine shape. But then again.. the price of drums are so cheap nowadays, why not.
Oh.. and don't re-service rotors, i'm not a fan.. esp. if they are warped or heat cracked |
ya, machined rotors warp even faster.
I've got 160,000 MILES on my original drums and shoes....pos-man. The rear does so little of the braking they wear out so slow, and properly serviced drums do last quite a long time....but ur right karl they for the price....why not....i think i spent $150 MAX on the front pads and rotors and the rear drums, shoes and spring kit for the wifes car when she first got it. |
i know man.. and getting parts at shop cost is ridicilious.. brake parts are so cheap man lol. They're pos parts.. but honda's are pos.. so it makes a good match.

With parts that cheap, you can afford replacing them every year or two. I've been using the cheap pads and rotors on my car for over 2 years now and they're still pretty solid. But i've got a set of powerslots that i got for free and i'm thiking about grabbing some EBC or hawk pads to compliment them. |

i havent done any brake change, so i dont want to screw it up since breaking is very important as for the pads and rotors, when i break, my break pedal shakes, n pads make noise but for the drum n shoes, the guy at the shop said i dont have to change it, but since i need a break service, might as well change the drums/shoes |
well 280 is a very good price. I would def. do it.
