Brake Problems

I just had a set of KVR cross drilled rotors (cadium plated)and KVR pads installed on my ride a couple of months ago. All of a sudden, I am getting major shutter at high speeds when braking. The brakes work spectacular at low speeds I don't see any evidence of a blue tinge on the rotor (overheating) either. Could things be warped already? Does anyone have any other suggestions on what else it could be? Anyone had a similar experience.?

definately a sign of warped rotors...I have the exact same KVR setup, love it..got about 20,000km on them, lots of hard braking...This tells me its not the quality of the parts and I dont dare blame your braking habbits, (cuz ive put mine through decent punishment), but rather the possibility of improper torquing of the lug nuts. It usually happens when someone just uses an air gun, which is fast, but over-torques the bolts. When the rotor heats up really hot, then it becomes just a little bit flexible, and the nuts holding on the rotor too tight and/or in differing pressures can cause the rotor to warp. It could also be a worn caliper that may have caused a prematurely warped rotor..might be warped brake rotors or drums "front or back" make sure to keep the backs in consideration... An accumulation of lining dust inside brake drums. Brake pads sticking in caliper. Broken shoe return springs inside brake drums or loose or worn suspension....some possabilites, tho SI doesnt have drums, does it??

Yeah ,the Si does have rear drums. I guess what Ill do next is inspect my rear brakes to make sure everything is kosher. I guess all I can do is replace the front discs. I don't need to replace the brake pads also do I? This time I'm gonna install them myself and make sure the bolts are torqued correctly!

Thnaks for the reply.

Does your steering wheel shake or does the whole car shake?

warped rotors... you hauled on the brakes, then parked your car... then came back to find your rotors warped.

But it doesn't have to be that... maybe your calipers were not serviced and you had a sticking pad. Either way, machining the rotor if possible, or getting another is the solution. Remember, when it comes to rotors, nothing is better than OEM for normal use (ie. non-track use).

**** I hope my brother's don't do the same thing, he just replaced all 4 with the same rotors. Will I be able to reuse the brake pads? Someone previously told me that you couldn't machine cross drilled rotors. Is this true?

What does machining cost?

Thanks for your help!

Machining the rotors is possible if you find the right person to do it. They are practically brand new. KVR is good **** generally speaking... I think it's a matter of pads sticking. Be sure to follow manual directions on how to service brakes. Yes, you can reuse the pads... I went through 3 sets of rotors with my original pads

With our discount at Parkway if you are a paid member, it would be cheaper to buy new OEM rotors than to have yours machined.

You pay $30 for TCC membership, and then the rotors are $55 bux each... otherwise, you pay closer to $80 bux or so. Buying a pair of rotors alone already saves you the cost of membership, plus for the next year you get discounts on all OEM parts Being a 2000, it's just about to start needing all the major regular maintenance items which is major $$$.

Depending on mileage, I'd be looking at distributor rotor and cap, plug wires, plugs, thermostat, fuel filter, valve adjustment, valve cover gasket, tranny fluid, coolant, air filter element replaced or cleaned depending on what you have... brakes bled and serviced, chassis parts inspected for damage like ball joints, tie rod ends... maybe get an alignment done. Those are all good maintenance items I can think of right now...
