brake problem: MC or Booster

hey,

lately I haven been having a problem with my brakes, I drive 1 hour to work, and for the first 1/2 hour they are fine, then the brake starts to feel really spongy, the brakes still work but the pedal goes almost to the floor, and if I am sitting at a stoplight my foot will slowly go further down holding down the break, I find if I let up on them the pressure returns for a few seconds, then the pedal goes down again, does this sound like the MC or booster?

thanks

Sounds like fluid is leaking past the internal seals of the M/C and if it's doing that, your BB is being filled with fluid. Also be sure to check the entire system for leaks, especially the rear wheel cylinders for the drums.

I haven't knowticed any leaks, or a loss in fluid for that matter, is it still possible the M/C is leaking internally or something

If your getting excess pedal travel and it's not air, your fluid is going somewhere. So, yes it's possible that the leak is internal.

I had that happen on my Caprice and replaced the M/C with a rebuilt one. I ended up having the exact same problem. I replaced the rebuilt M/C with a new one. Lesson learned.

same thing I had with my EF, and yes it was the master cylinder, it was leaking into the booster very lightly. replace master cyl and clean booster.

I got a real nice one from NAPA, but I think Canadian Tire is cheaper

ya, it is definitly inconsistant, like on my drive to work, everything was fine for the first 20-30 min but the last 30 min it really started to act up, I am shopping around for a new m/c now...

i just wanna add my problem here since its fairly similar, but if no one take notice of this post, i'll post a new thread...

i'm having a similar situation with my 96 civic si... however, it happens only time to time... 85% time its fine! but sometimes when i step on the brake pedal to try to come to a full stop, the pedal would gradually going all the way to the floor like its really soft (or losing pressure or something) and the car is still not fully stop yet but its slowing down really slowly... so i had to let go and reapply the brake after a sec, then the pressure is back... but this only happens time to time... 85% of the time, the brake pressure is there, like when i step on it, it doesn't feel soft and goes to the floor, and its braking efficiently... i want to see what input i get here first! i'm not gonna go high speed because i don't want to lose the brake on the highway!

could this be brake fluids? or need a brake bleed? or my mc is screwed? my car is a 96 civic si coupe 5spd, rear drum, at 217500 KM... thanks

either leaky rear cylinder or master cyl is fuct. visually inspect all flex lines and wheel cyls/calipers for leaks if none are found replace your master cyl.
