Bolt-on VS. Custom exhaust systems

I need to know what the advantages of both are... as i am in the market for an exhaust system....

I was thinking that since i need a cat converter i could just get custom done and be done with it, but there is pre-made bolt on exhausts and i would have to get a shop to weld on a cat converter...

any input is welcome

-Matt

I prefer bolt on systems, generally because you can do the labour yourself when doing the install.

Bolt on systems tend to sound better IMHO

One big killer of exhausts are rusting of the welds and Factory welds tend to be better than custom welds. But be aware there are some bolt on exhausts with crappy welds as well. have a good eye, learn to spot good welds.

Also when replacing parts of your exhaust
eg. lets say your muffler rusts out
Its easier to find used parts that will bolt up to a bolt on system then a custom. There are constant slight variables with a custom... the piping might sit higher/lower.... etc

^^^^ dont forget the costs of cutting and welding in new pieces
when your custom exhaust starts to go to the ****er.
direct bolt on all the way.

I got a custom made 2.25" stainless cat-back for a lot cheaper then any bolt on exhaust that is made for my car in stainless. Everything is welded together except for the actual muffler. Good quality bolt on's for my car were like $750-$950. I paid $550 including hi-flow cat and muffler but I did have somewhat of a hookup.

hmmm....
would my theory work for the cat converter?
buy a bolt on system and mod the cat to work(put on my own flanges to a universal cat)

I have only ever heard one good custom exhaust system, that was from brullen.....they make everything from scratch (muffler, cat, piping....). with one of there systems your looking at about $900.00 though (you get what you pay for). As for bolt on systems, they are great, mass produced in a way that they know how they are going to sound and perform. Greedy, Apexi, Tanabe etc. all very nice systems. If your worried about them lining up and you getting a cat anyways, got to a place with the exhaust system and tell them to put a cat on and make it line up properly with your new shinny muppler...........

Well say what you want about custom exhaust, but after putting mine on even with my p.o.ss 92hp motor I felt a HUGE difference in the way the car pulled, especially on the highway.

yes "they" do

they have midpipes that are smooth mandrel bent all the way through. They are prefabbed according to the model of the car.

what they will do is just cut sections out and weld in a resonator, add flange at the end... etc

bolt on systems should be smooth mandrel bends.

Its all dependant on how much you want to pay.

also be aware of the different materials

-Stainless Steel
-Aluminzed Steel

Its all based around how much you want to pay
