bogging problem

Hi all, im having a problem with my car and im seeking some help here. Anyway when im driving my car in any gear from 1-5 @ around 1500-2300 rpm my car boggs and put's horribly but after around 2500 rpm the car picks up it's power and runs well. Anyone know what this problem can be. I was thinking the fuel filter, fuel pump, plugs and wires or filter but I need to minimize my options. Any way I can tell if plugs and wires are good?. Any ideas would be great. Thanx

Sounds like you just need a tune up...

Is your exhaust black at all, what kinda mileage are you getting, when did this start, any MIL,

Plugs you take out and "read". Check the gap, clean them, if neither electrode is damaged, you may be able to reuse them, but considering the price, I'd say replace them. Plug wires you test conductivity and resistance, also check for cracks by running it in the dark and watching for spark escaping... Take your distributor cap and rotor out, and inspect. If the contacts are corroded and melted, it's time for new ones. Have you checked your timing lately with a strobe light? To tell you the truth, the bog from 1500-2300, assuming your ignition components check out, sounds like an overfueling problem. Themostat or Coolant Temp Sensor could be doing this... that's why I ask about the mileage and if you get any black exhaust soot. Lemme know, and I can tell you what to test further...

thx bb. I took out the wires and checked them on my multimeter and they are fine. I replaced the plugs and the car runs fine now, but im not sure if it will come back or not b/c I only drove up and down the street. If it still does return im going to change teh cap and rotor next. How do I check the timing with a strobe light?
If any of the sensors were messed it would shoot a code but it's not so I don't think then sensors have anything to do with it. thx again

You didn't say what kind of mileage you are getting. Thing with THOSE sensors, is that it COULD be -50 degrees out, the comp doesn't know that it's May/June So it won't throw a code, but i'll use hella more fuel... again bringing me back to the gas consumption question. The cap and rotor should not be causing you problems at diff't temperatures... it either fires or it doesn't. It's good practice to clean and inspect them though

Timing, you need a timing light, and that's a stobe, so you hook it up to your #1 wire and run the car and point the light at the timing marks on the crank pulley, and it strobes when the #1 cyl fires, so it's like a snapshot of the timing marks, so you see that's how it's done.

oops the mileage part....the thing is the gas is going down a bit quicker than before but I have a mugen chipped ecu so the fuel maps are a bit aggressor than stock. But I did put back my original si ecu yesterday so I have to fill up and annalyze the mileage but I rarely drive so i'll have to get back to you in a few days or a week to notice anything.

Can I get that timing light at canadian tire? if so how much will it run me.

Ok, get back to me. A timing light - Walmart or CT, like $40 or something

Ok im bringing this up from the dead just to update here. BB I drove like 170K and didn't burn much fuel so I would say it seems fine now. Plus I also replaced the fuel filter yesterday so it's running quite well now. Thanx again

I thought it was that also but it wasn't. It can be many things but I suggest just a basic tune up. I checked the wires with a multimeter and all were fine so I replaced the plugs for like $15 and it wen't away
Pretty strange how plugs can do this and when I removed my old ones they weren't even that bad at all. Then I just replaced the fuel filter b/c you never know that can be clogged up or contaminated and when I get a chance im going to replace my cap and rotor. So I suggest replacing those 3 things first b/c they are not too expensive and they're quite doable. Anther thing that can cause major bogging is a clogged catalytic convertor, happened to my old car and it was quite bad and only did it when the engine was warm also, replaced it and it ran mint.

I have this problem just recently.. thing is I just used some Engine Cleaner to clean my car, and now its doing it all of a sudden. Just around 2500 it bogs, after that it picks up speed fine. I am going to check my plugs and wires..... I know my cat is bad though, but it wasn't doing this before I washed the engine. So is there anything specific to look for .. like water in plugs or something?
