Blowing lots of black smoke...y?

hey guys...I have a 18C1 transplant in my 93 si civic running a p28 comp that is chipped. I have been experiencing a lot of black smoke coming out of my exhaust when I'm stepping on it...my fuel pressure is set to about 44 psi....I know black smoke represents unburnt feul..therfore I lowered my feul presure to about 42 psi....however the black smoke still persists....can anyone give my any advise on this situation?? My sohc motor had the same symptoms before I spun a bearing and I 'm a little worried about this motor? anything opinions?? thks

got nothing to do with spinning a bearing

you need to get tuned... your chip might be pure ass for your car, or one of the sensors is not reporting correctly. Time to start troubleshooting, from cleaing your filter, to new plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, O2 sensor... and if that doesn't make it go away... then you have to look at other items that determine fuel trim.

Engines running rich...go directly to the source of this problem...something with fuel management

not always... poor spark or improper timing can make it run rich too... all "rich" means when used as loosely as you've used it, is that not all the fuel is burning up (not necessarily that it's TOO much fuel, but rather not all of it is burning)... which is hell on the cat and o2 sensor BTW. What kinda fuel economy are you getting?

my h22 actually runs kinda "rich" when I give it ofcourse.. It's not a LOT, but after a month of driving I got black carbon on my bumper.

I get about 450 KM to the 40 L civic tank. That's with booting it into vtec quite often. So I think i'm running pretty good.

Isn't some carbon expected though when you push a car hard?

rat, you are chipped, it's to be expected.

even stock, the car goes into the first two green LEDs on the Autometer a/f gauge under two unrelated conditions:

1. TPS>75%
2. or high load at any time

I'm unsure of the ratio at the first two LEDs but it's just slightly richer than stochiometric. This is a bit of a safety measure against detonation and prolly for lower Oxides of Nitrous (NOx) emissions too.

Too much black smoke is prolly no good though - your mileage is quite excellent, though any swap should get better mileage since you don't push the motor as hard to move such a lightweight chassis.

in other words, no problem at all rat, you're running top notch, I say you should keep the car.

lol.. yeah you've said keep the car quite a few times..

bbarbulo 11-Sep-2003 03:26 PM

cuz I think you're letting it go way to cheap! if you keep it, you can get 3 years use out of it, and still sell it for the same price. you put a lot of work into it!

punkindrublic 11-Sep-2003 03:27 PM

i would also say keep the car... or donate it to me maybe??

imported_Cablerat 11-Sep-2003 03:31 PM

yeah your right Bruno.. It'll be a lot easier to do another one though :)

lol donate it to u punk? if you want I'll finance you!

hahaha deal

as for the original topic... my car puff nice smoke when revving high and maintaining an rpm like 6500... its kinda cool and scares people behind me but its been happening forever and nothing sounds or smells weird so i just go with it....

a while back my oil drain plug was mis threaded (idiot mechanics) and it would drip lots... and i got mybuddies car with like 15 drips of oil on a drive once...
