benefits of a racing steering wheel?

what are the benefits of a racing steering wheel? i like the look and assume it will help me handle the car a little better, but is it that much of an upgrade that its worth losing the airbag? as well, is it legal?

imported_mugen_r 25-Mar-2006 09:59 PM

if your car has factory bags, it is illegal to remove them with a non srs steering wheel.

it's just nicer to grip and you can get smaller sizes, more convenient then a stock wheel.

imported_mikepasini 26-Mar-2006 12:21 PM

so, ppl that do it with the factory air bags are aaking for a ticket???

can i put a hub on and keep my standard wheel in the car and if i get pulled over quickly swap wheels from the racing one to the regular one? Thanks.

imported_JDMman 26-Mar-2006 12:35 PM

^ wow that would be a mission to pull off.....

i have no air bag in my steering wheel so im good to go... im planning on swaping in a type r steering wheel.... keeping it oem but upgrading to a nicer oem wheel... if you want better looks get teh type r wheel with air bag.. looks really hot...

i know they fit right into an eg.. but not sure about your model... its just a suggestion anyways.

imported_mikepasini 26-Mar-2006 12:43 PM

that wheel looks sick yo... that would go nice with my interior... u know where u can get them for less than like $500 which is what i have seen them going for before? I have an ek, so i am sure i could get one to fit.

sin-city 26-Mar-2006 03:13 PM

jdm man.. how much is that wheel ... it cant be more than a brand new momo racing wheel.. top notch wheels are like 370ish.. so i dont see how mike could be offering around 500$ for a stock OEM wheel

kwikb16a2 26-Mar-2006 04:48 PM

it is more than 370, a air bag alone from honda costs double that. Racing wheels IMO are ghey and it sucks hitting the turn signal everytime u turn

EL_CIVIC 27-Mar-2006 12:13 AM

from what i learned... if the airbag deploys from a previous accident..you are not required to change it..

team rukus.. .is this true?

imported_Team Rukus 27-Mar-2006 01:04 AM

you are not required to change it.
however insurance has the right to refuse your claim if you get into an accident without it and also has the right to drop you.

what people have to understand is that its not illegal from a gov't point of view as you can remove the airbag and drive without it and its not a ticketable offence however having no insurance is a criminal offence and guess what? insurance demands that a car equipped with an airbag be with an airbag no matter how many times it explodes and that it be functional too.

imported_italstallion 27-Mar-2006 01:44 AM

i really dont understand the point of taking out a steering wheel that came out of a car with an airbag to put in a non-airbag one...i understand it looks 10000 times better than stock but it wont look so good with your brains splattered over your momo steering wheel.the one jdmman posted up is very nice and still saves your life

civic?eww?y? 28-Mar-2006 12:53 AM

your brain splattered over your momo steering wheel?

Lol... how do you suppose your head will make contact with the steering wheel?

Dont you wear a seatbelt when driving?

civic?eww?y? 28-Mar-2006 12:54 AM

Team Rukus: Great info !

well if you have ever seen the slow motion crash test theyou would know that even if u do have a seatbelt on it is possible to hit the steeringwheel and even if u miss the wheel and hit the wind shield your brain "residue"will be ALL OVER the car.because if that were the case then nobody would have airbags we would all just have seatbelts.

imported_Moe_Mentum 28-Mar-2006 09:22 AM

Not worth it in my opinion... Especially with my Car. I would Lose Airbag, Cruise Control, and on most aftermarket wheels I would need to relocate the horn. PITA

imported_JDMman 28-Mar-2006 11:03 AM

its all about factors within the accident itself... people have gotten serious neck injurys from airbags that would have not accured if the air bag wasn't there... so you never know...

as for that steering wheel..... after marker and oem are totaly different... high end oem tends to cost alot.. as said before the air bag also adds to the price.... the type r steering wheel without air bag goes for roughly the same price as a new momo wheel... 300.. roughly..... but the one with the air bag can go for arond 500... sounds kinda step but its not a bad deal for something way better then what you have now... still has the air bag... and doesn't need a hub to be installed...

are you ****ing retarded? so prior to 1990-ish, peoples heads just exploded all over the steering wheel in an accident and everyone died instantly, is that what you're saying??

airbags are a recent addition and quite frankly I don't necessarily like them. you still have to wear your seatbelt, and that is your primary restraint. the airbag is a SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM. it doesn't mean your head will explode without it. IMO, while they are good for prolly most ppl... they add costs to our insurance policies by increasing the cost of fixing the crap. I mean, yeah they might reduce injuries in severe crashes, but in small fender benders... no one would get hurt anyways, and they add about $1000 or so to the repair of the vehicle. anyways... airbag or not should be a personal choice.

yeah but the older cars had a way more sturdy frame and didnt crumple upon impact like the newer cars do.like i saw my friends 2002 civic get hit in a parkinglot the other guy was doing 40kms and his civic was a write off and the 1990-1997(not sure what year?)toyota camry v6 just had a broken licencse plate cover.now im not saying that airbags are the save all be all answer but if definitely helps

im not changing my mind at all maybe u should read next time...all i said was that airbags play a large role in surviving crashes and i would not advise anyone to take it out for the sake of a cosmetic upgrade.
