B20 Transmission combo?

hey buddys..Im in the progress of putting together a B20Z swap for the ride. Im curious on which transmission i should pair up with it, since its not a high revving enging (to my knowledge). Would an LS tranny be better with longer gears..or would i be better off with the b16 or gsr tranny? Im not even sure what difference if any it will make but it just popped in my head now. I want to keep it HYDRO too...so any info would be great! thanks!

Well my buddy has a B20 with an LS tranny and he still complains that it rev's too high on the highway!!!!!!! If you want to drag race or autocross and don't commute very much out of your town than get a GSR or B16 tranny. With an LS tranny you can still peel in 3rd. Personally Id sacrifice a bit of acceleration to make it highway worthy. Get the LS tranny. I had a Subaru that revved at 3500rpm at like 110km/h!!!!!!!!!!!! Its a huge piss off. You can't go anywhere. You don't even want to jump on the highway cause your suckign gas and your engine is buzzing the whole way. Unless your not leaving whitby or you have another car than I reccomend the LS tranny.

i usually drive locally and not on the highway...but id like to get a decent mid 14's car going on here

scarlemthug 07-May-2005 03:57 PM

depends what u want, with my B18b1 and gsr tranny im doing 3900 in 5th at 120 so figure an LS tranny would be around 3K im guessing? If you want the best of both worlds grab a GSR tranny, LSD preferably and it should be fine. Even with the high rev's i still get over 500km's to a tank:P.

stock94block 07-May-2005 04:04 PM

still 500kms a tank? thats great mileage..i WILL buy LSD no doubt. So with your b18/GSR tranny are you happy with how it performs at the track and on the street? (im asking because b18 & b20 are very similar)

scarlemthug 07-May-2005 04:07 PM

well i havent tracked it yet but it performs awesome on the street. The problem is that even wit hthe GSR tranny it lacks pull in 4th and 5th and the LS tranny has longer gears which means it would have even less pull. I pushed that engine pretty hard everyday and still get like 500km's to a tank with beating on it:).

scarlemthug 07-May-2005 04:08 PM

Basically if u plan on keeping the car N/A i would get the GSR tranny, if u are gonna boost then id look at the LS tranny or GSR tranny with LS 5th gear:).

imported_Mikeye 07-May-2005 07:58 PM

what exactly does LSD do? I know it means limited slip differential, but what does it do?

not planning on boost since ive heard B20 blocks crack easily...plus i only want N/A..just a nice motor to rip around in + reliable

itll probably be a B20Z/GSR tranny..with a couple of bolt on's..new cams, intake manifold, header..etc etc..i think i should pull at least mid 14's

or at least i HOPE

scarlemthug 07-May-2005 09:50 PM

jooksingkid on here with a stock exhaust and short ram intake pulled a 14.6 in his si hatch with a B20z/gsr combo. The problem with the B20 block is that cylinders 2 and 3 are attached and tend to crack down the middle under pressure.

u should be good with a B20z/GSR LSD combo with some minor bolt-ons.

Yeah.. you should hit mid 14's with good sticky tires (drag radials) I hit a 14.7 in a CRX with ****ty tires, and nothing was dialed in properly, and i had a full tank/interior.

If i were you id run a GSR trans.

imported_BoOsTd 08-May-2005 11:15 AM

GSR as everyone else stated

interesting steve, i remember hearing it was just 2 and 3 and thats why most cracks on b20's occur between those 2?

scarlemthug 09-May-2005 05:20 PM

thanks for the info steve:)

what you should do for the real best of both worlds... is buy a gsr transmition and swap in an LS 5th gear.... then you get chick impressing acceleration and you'll be able to buy her a few more drinks witb all your gas savings  to seal the deal or something

nah, i've seen all of them crack.

and WHY do they crack?~!!!?!?!?!?!??!?!? do you have experience with the B20, i dont know anyone who has done this install that i can ask for advice about

stock94block 11-May-2005 10:07 AM

I plan on staying N/A and non-vtec..but adding on Intake, Header, Exhaust, higer performance cams, larger throttle body, fuel pump, injectors, P&P, flywheel..and tuning....So the basic bolt-ons, i shouldnt hope i run into any trouble with this, but what are your thoughts?

stock94block 11-May-2005 12:31 PM

i know it seems that, but i am stuck in my ways like an 80 year old.. haha

im not looking to make a rocket ship here
