b18a1 or d15 turbo

im hoping this is in the right section, i was wondering which is better for a 90 civic sedan with the stock d15 and 5 spd, a b18a1 or some sort of ghetto rigged turbo set up, i already have a donor car for the b swap, but what all would i need? and what kind of turbo setup would give me decent power without having to worry about detonation? any help would be appreciated...thanks

well what are your goals in terms of power the b18a would be slower compared to a turbo-D but if your going to upgrade later on then i would say start off with the b18 then turbo it later on when funds permit.

colder plugs, retard timing, good gas. And you most likely won't get any.

Dont forget - lower boost. Unless you rebuild your block with forged internals (pistons, crank, connecting rods) you have no business running anything over 9psi - unless you love to tow your car and waste tons of cash rebuilding your motor.

I'm sorry your wrong.

9 psi is different on every set-up, even if the turbos are the same.

You shoulf of said the stock block can take 220-230whp when tuned properly.

I plan on running 10 pounds in the summer on my stock block but since I have a small t25 it's not going to be making any serious numbers over 230

Hmm. If the originating poster had a minty fresh block - maybe, but I doubt it. Hondas crank and rods and pistons are not really built to handle the task - period. He's just looking at making 150-160 hp. So he should use a small turbo (ihi 5rhb or T25 etc..) and use the stock internal wastegate (usually set at 7 to 8 psi) in order to keep his motor in ONE piece. Cast pistons really do not handle boost all that well.

Most guys literally slap on a turbo set up before making sure the engine is worthy of handling boost. A stock d15 is 9.1:1 compression - so that in itself is an issue. So lets see - high compression + non forged internals + higher boost = recipe for trouble.

Sure you can run higher boost - but you also run the greater risk of destroying your motor and loosing all that cash you throw into it - RIGHT? Then we'll see that same turbo set up back here on the classifieds in a few months....

Remember - he'd probably be using stock CAST internals......

All that being said, IF you prep your engine properly, and run moderate boost (and maintain a VERY VIGIL EYE on your air/fuel ratio - a lean condition you really, really want to avoid...) you will get decent HP increase and your engine should last. And I think that is what the orginating poster would prefer.

I'm not saying you can't make 200+ hp, on stock internals, but seeing that alot of people on the board don't have lots of excess coinage to spend on rebuilding their blocks, moderation is key here.

I run 15 psi daily - but then my block came from the factory with forged internals, hardened seats and valves. All SVO/TurboCoupe engines came like that. With Gillis valve installed I can run easily 18-19 psi with NO adverse effects (except fuel consumption), and the motor will last another 100k.
