B16A2 Problems -- Giving Code For Crank Reference

B16A2 Problems
---------------------

I recently bought a 1988 CRX Si and decided I was gonna throw a B16 in it.............I have done swaps before so I anticipated that this one would be no different. However I was wrong, & here is why.

Details:

(Chassis Info)
1988 Honda Civic CRX Si (EF9?)
OBD-0 Chassis Harness

(Engine Info)
19?? JDM B16A2 Engine
1993 Integra GS-R Cable Transmission
OBD-1 Engine Harness
OBD-1 Conversion harness (to convert body harness to engine harness so that the ECU will plug in)
P28 ECU

(Problem Info)
Ok, the thing runs, but here is the problem, it will only rev upto 3500 RPM then govern out. I checked for codes and a code came up for 'Top Dead Center Position Sensor' (Code 8). Since that sensor is located in the distributor I changed it with a BRAND NEW distributor, but the problem remained. Next thing, I tried putting in an OBD-1 P30 ECU & still things stayed the same. Next I tried putting an OBD-0 B18A ecu in with no luck.
I found a pinout diagram from a P30 and tried running the wires for the TDC, CPY & CKP sensors within the distributor to the ecu.
I still have the exact same problems. I even tried changing the Main relay and still had no luck.

So I am wondering if there is any other sensors that interfere with crank position making the ecu give me an incorrect code.

I also have a code flashing for Intake Air Temp. (Don't have the sensor for it being an OBD-0 Body) & a code for Electonic Coolant Temp.

I don't believe these could be affecting the running condition of the car, but at this point i'm no longer sure of anything......

Please anyone out there HELP!!!!!!!!

hey matt....u know who it is...i can only comment of the last 2 of ur problems.most likely why it's throwing the IAT code is because the p28/p30 ecu's are looking for it EVEN though the car obd o body doesn't have it. try running a PW0 1st gen b16 ecu and see what happens

2. ECT(code 6) most likely has to do with the a2 block.i know somebeody that just finished swaping between b16 bottom ends on his ef and has the exact problem. When we compared it on my car,the housing has a different part of the block..which is weird.Check also to see if it's wired properly on the harness.

hope u figure out the main problem which has the car running limp.

peace

Brian!!

I know about the IAT and have traced the ECT and wired it directly to the ECU. My only guess is that the sensor is bad. It is located on the thermostat housing (just below the distributor & behind the head)

I'm gonna do some more plugging away on this damned car........i'll make my own harness if I have to........this blasted POS is gonna work!!! I haven't had a swap fail yet & this one is no different.

try the crank position sensor. it is located on the oil pump behind the timing belt covers but it shouldnt matter cause your car doesnt use one. use a pr3 computer that is the correct one to use. if you dont have one i do but its chipped for my 2.0, i will let you try it out but you need a first gen b16 chip for it. now not to insult you but the plug wires are on the right cylinders?

I have all the plugs in the right positions and the engine idles great. My engine, being an OBD-1 does not use a crank angle sensor located under the timing cover. I only have the crank postion sensor in the distributor.

I was underneath the dash today and noticed that a few wires on my body harness were snipped, and one was a distributor wire. So I repaired the wire & reset the ECU.........and I still have the same problem, only now I get code 6...........Crank Position Sensor (before I was getting a code 8 - Top Dead Center Sensor). I Changed distributors again & even cross- referenced resisitance from the sensors and both CKP sensors in both distributors are showing the same resistance in the same positions. I changed ECU's again aswell as I was wondering if any electrical components may have been damaged due to the bad wiring.

I was talking to a friend and he had mentioned to me that different years of B-series use different ignitors & pickups from the CKP sensor. But I have an OBD-0 B16 distributor & an OBD-1 Distributor and neither change the situation of my CKP sensor. My motor being an OBD-1 motor I would figure my OBD-1 B-series distributor would work. Could this be the case? I'm going to have to try & swap distributors on running B16's to find out.

Also, I have swapped the ignitors from within each distributor with still no change of state from 'limp' mode.

Another day has effectively gone by costing me time, money & effort for a problem that should have been easily repaired. This car is getting on my nerves...........

again did you check to make sure the wires are going to the right plugs? i have seem this problem where it idles fine but wont rev past 3000 and it was cause the guy had the wires going to the wrong plugs.

Yea, made my own wire harness using a shop manual from a 94 Del Sol & an 88 CRX and made the damn thing work. Motor runs fine now.

Lesson learned, never trust anyones work but your own.

Thanks for all the suggestions
