b16a2 200WHP?!?

Hey everyone,

I have a 1999 Civic Si (Canadian Si) and I'm thinking of purchasing a B16A2 JDM engine to replace the D16Y8 that's currently there. My question is, what am I going to need other then the engine and tranny to do this conversion? Am I gonna need new engine mounts and stuff or Will and JDM B16A2 just bolt right in. Am I gonna need to upgrade the rear drum brakes to disk brakes to handle teh extra power? I heard the integra disk brakes bolt right into my car and its should be sufficient enough.

Also I want to build a reliable daily driver that can output approximately 180-200whp with a turbo running low boost. Is the B16A2 a good candidate and is easily attainable? What else will I need to prep the engine to handle the kind of power I want (ie. fuel injectors, rods, cams etc)?

FInally has anyone bought and engine from teknotik? They're one of torontocivics affiliates, but I want some of ur opinions? Are all their engines as clean or close to clean as the pictures they have on their webiste?

Thanks guys

There is a 6 hour DVD that teaches you how to make 200whp NA B16 to run on pump gas.

You really need to do some research on what it is you want to do. A B16 is pretty high compression so not as boost friendly as let's say a B18B or B20B. A B16 has a near perfect rod to stroke ratio, meaning the bottom end can handle a lot of revs. With a valve train up grade to prevent valve float you'd be surprised at how high she'll rev. It's a better NA motor than a boosted one. Anything over 5 psi is putting a lot of strain on it. Mind you wiht the compression 5psi will give you more power than on the same psi of a lower compression motor. Do some research.

Drums are fine in my opinion - rear brakes do very little braking 20% tops. I've road raced both and with proper brake fluid I don't really see the need to upgrade. If anything, I find adjusting rear brake bias easier with drums than discs since it can be done with a screw driver. Larger front rotors are more important as is a larger MC and Booster. There is a poor man's ITR brake upgrade that involves an ITR 1" MC (or 15/16ths), booster, calipers and redrilled 11" 4X100 rotors. There's no running 14" rims anymore, but braking will be super strong and very precise.

200whp out of a boosted b16 is childs play and can be done on stock internals. But if you really want to make good power get some forged rods and low compression pistons and run some decent psi.
You will need different mounts, axles and shift linkages along with the b16 engine, tranny and ecu.
But its a straight forward simple swap and can be done over a weekend with a buddy or two.

i know a couple stock b16 turbos making 300whp & 200+ torque on 7psi

Thanks guys

Silent Si on these forums got everything done over there and he says the engine is perfect he got a B18c1 :)

LEITNER & ZEEMAN

So if I end up boosting it, will the engine be a reliable daily driver?
300whp is alot of power! So if I do go with the b16a2 setup with boost, it will be a reliable daily driver?

Thanks in advance for ur help!

if you tune it right... anything can be reliable as a daily... just that you'll be looking for some ultra94 from now on....

also, you need mounts, shafts, linkage to swap the b16a2... tek is where you wanna go for engines and stuff (no complaints whatsoever before)...

also, if you gonna boost... go with the b18s... such as the b18b or b18c1 (gsr)... good to boost... especially get the gsr or ls tranny and get LSD done....

to get 200whp, you don't really need to boost that b16a2... if you tune and build it right... going NA would do too... like pistons, cams, injectors, port/polish, angle job, etc.... and tune your car right.... but then its the tuning that costs you... talk to some of our affiliates such as defcon, tek... and i know paul from splitfire does tuning too...

zeeman 29-Sep-2005 10:28 PM

well in order to obtain 200whp out of a N/A b16 it will take lots of money, it would honestly be cheaper to boost it than build it for n/a.
Tuning is KEY.
Boosted cars are high maintainance, much more than even a heavily built N/A engine. But there are people who drive boosted cars daily. I would IF i had another car for the winter.

LEITNER 30-Sep-2005 06:26 AM

one of the guys i know has 75000 on his set up and its still going. i would say thats reliable wouldnt you? he has the odd hic up but he drives the car every single day and puts about 2-3000 kms on it a week. its a plain bearing turbo too. you just need to remember that longevity depends on you. very frequent oil changes (every 3000km) and the odd beating and it should last a while. the most important thing though is the frequent oil changes cause the turbo heat breaks oil down quite quickly.

I'm sorry did you say 300whp on just 7 p.s.i. in a b16. i dunno about that. i made 300whp at 12.4p.s.i. with a completely stock internaled b16 and even that is pushing it. I do agree that tuning is everything, hence the fact that i spend atleast $1000/yr in tuning if not more. I drive my car daily infact i drive it everywhere. I do have the occasional hic up but regular maintenence is a must.

If you are gonna boost don't look at the now cost so much but look at the after cost closely because it is very expensive to maintain.

imported_t_dot_SiR 01-Oct-2005 03:22 AM

well, let's conclude this

TUNING is the KEY
but TUNING is MONEY too

so NO MONEY, NO POWER!... proper tuning brings the potential out of each setup/engine... 200whp is not that tough to obtain and be reliable IF you have the money to put in

Teknotik is your best bet to go if you want a legit reliable engine at a decent price. I spoke to Eric for a while about different engines he can get me/different set-ups I could run and how he runs his business. And honestly his business is 100% legit. His motors are also tested pretty damn well.. so you know you aren't getting a sh!t engine opposed if you go to some other engine shop such as Lucky.
