B16a with lsd *HELP*

well i have been wanting to get my engine swapped for a few months now and i wanted to get a b18c1. It seems like everyone i come across wont go cheaper then 3500, and that is a little to expensive for me rite now. I came across a jdm b16a with lsd tranny and i believe it is a 1993 with around 60000km on it. the engine is selling for 1800 at a japanese parts store and is with in my price range! Do you guys think it is worth it and would it be quick in my 93 si hatch.

I also came across a b18b with gsr tranny for 2000 but im not sure if that one is worth it. its a 1999 with around 90000km on it and its usdm without lsd. In the future i might boost it but im not sure if i will have the founds because of school.

Is the b16a worth the price? or do u think i might encounter problems with it? due to it being 13 years old? besides looking at it i cant find any problems with it and there is no way i can take it a part and lok at the head serperate from the block?

What suggestions do u guys have? I really aprreciate your help, and once again thanx.

the b16a motor puts out about 160 hp, its still a decent motor, depends on how fast you really want your car to be, its all want you want really...LSD tranny with def help you out, but still depends on what you wanna do..if you wanna race or just daily drive it

if your worried about the engine conditon..just get a compression test done, before finalizing the buy, and if they will not let you I would say get a motor from some where else

GHT,

you gotta ask yourself what's your ultimate goal?

if you're looking to boost then maybe getting the b18b is the way to go, why waste a ton of money on a powerful N/A motor when you're only gonna tear it apart and boost it.

mind you though, if a few grand is gonna make/break your budget then boost definitely isn't the way to go, heh.

for the amount it will cost to boost your car you could buy a dsm and still have money to spare ;/

but as for the motor, like people have been saying, do a compression test, even out of the car with a battery you can turn it over.

check for any signs of moisture/leaks on all the gaskets (especially the head gasket), look for cracks on piping, around bolts, etc.

take a look at the oil pan see if it's in ok shape, not sure about honda's but in 240's a slightly bent oil pan means bye bye motor (blocks the oil squirter pick ups)

check for crankwalk even, big issue with 7-bolt DSMs,

and yeah, take the cover off, look for sludge and check out the oil consistency (ie, is there any water in it?) if it looks like milk chocolate you're in trouble, but then again, a compression test will let you know if there's that much damage

not an issue for you, but when you're doi'n a compression test you wanna do it with the motor cold, not warm, so you're ok since I'm assuming the motor isnt' in a car right now.

you can also check the serial number with the ministry see if it's stolen or whatever.

not really sure how you would check for an LSD with the tranny out of the car... could be trying to pull a fast one on you with that as well.

maybe if you had a set of axles of you could hold onto one while a buddy tries to spin the other and see what happens. heh.

hope that helps a bit.

Also toss that 'it only has 60,000km' out the window.

And with the money you save buying a DSM you can replace the tranny onec it explodes.

But to check for the LSD look through the tranny and if you can see through it equals LSD, a bar through it equals no LSD.

you definately take a chance when buying a japanese imported engine. You could get one that runs crappy and has broken/missing sensors or a janked tranny with a bad diff or gears that grind or the ever-common extremely worn clutch. I know b/c i've been there myself.
Change the timing belt/water pump while the engine is out, trust me on this one...and the clutch too if you can afford it. Its much easier to do with the engine/tranny out of the car.
Do you plan on doing the labour yourself?
There are lots of little things that people forget about when doing a swap...such as, alternator/power steering belts, upper and lower rad hoses, tranny fluid, rad fluid, oil, those little things that nickle and dime you to death.
Be prepared to work out some bugs too.
A b16 in an EG hatch is decently quick....what b16's lack in torque they make up for in top-end...and with the short geared b16 tranny it keeps the revs high when shifting at 8200rpms.

Is this a 1st gen b16 with a hydro tranny? Or a full obd1 b16 swap? 1800 seem a bit low, check the head to see what year the motor is.
