b16 hep

my b16 burns a lot of oil. I have al the bolt ons, along with a fully built head itr im and tb. My bottom end is factory b16. I realize im burning a lot of oil.

1) Does that affect my power
2) what could it be and should i fix it or swap the block and drop a b20 or b18ls or a gsr type r .
3) which is the cheapest and which will be the most relible and fastest.

depends on how much cash you have... how much oil are we talking?

imported_eth0r 19-Jul-2006 05:31 AM

chances are your piston rings are no good, how much are you burning?

nadir 19-Jul-2006 10:01 AM

well, i added oil up to the second dot , well a lil higher...lasst wekk thursday..Then i drove all day friday, i put about 700 km in 1 day non stop on the highway at around 140 the entire time..Then i put the next day another 200. i checked my oil a few days after and it was between the first and second dot. a lil higher than half. so i added 75% of a litre of oil motul10w

now, i im pretty strapped for cash, so i want to fix it the cheapest ...but if its my piston rings, i will buy new pistons high compression so i get something out of the deal....whats the cheapest route and how much will it cost ...

imported_Sir_Civik 19-Jul-2006 06:35 PM

ive got the same problem... burnin more oil than the gulf war :(

its to the point now where i notice it in my rear view while under mild acceleration :( x 2

if i give it hard i look like a old transport truck :( x 3

how much do new rings cost?.... & how much would a good place charge to have it done?

zeeman 19-Jul-2006 08:37 PM

new rings = pretty much a complete rebuild of the bottom end.
It would be cheaper to swap in a lower mileage engine.
If you're in there replacing the rings you gotta pull the head and replace the head gasket, you need new rod bearings and if you're replacing them you might as well do the main bearings/thrust washers. And if you're gunna spend the money on that you should do the oil pump, water pump, timing belt and tensioner. Along with new rear main seal and oil pan gasket and pickup tube gasket you would have basically a completely rebuilt bottom end. If you can do the labour yourself this will only cost about $1000.
You can build a stock b20vtec (which IMO would be more fun than rebuilding the b16) for around the same price ($600-800 for b20 and $300 for the golden eagle vtec conversion kit, which is worth every penny IMO) a stock b20vtec w/bolt-ons will yeild 160-180whp and 140-150ft/lbs compared to a stock b16's 140-160whp and 110-118ft/lbs. The added displacement of the b20 yeilds a lot more torque which translates into a broader powerband and more useable power...or a really fun street car.

well i gotta do somthing... i just dont have time to research or do any of this stuff myself..

so say i wanted to build the b20vtec... how quick do u think i could have this project completed... how long without a car.. and labour and everything included if somone in kitchener wanted to help me how much u thinkin im lookin at total?

imported_mikepasini 19-Jul-2006 10:11 PM

i was quoted roughly 2800 assuming you brought the bottom end in and it would be built... i think somewhere between 200-220whp and 150-170 wtq...

nadir 20-Jul-2006 11:03 AM

i hear you about thegulf war....My white car hasa black rear bumper...i spend soo much on car washes it aint funny....now..im leaning towards buying a type r. ANd slap it on. BUT remember ,most of the r's are abused...a more reliable approach would be buy a b20 for around 800 from tecknotik and buuy a glden eagle vtec cconversion kit. and slap it on. JUST LIKE THAT...and keep the rev's to about 7500 msx and it should be really reliable................now which is faster

option 1-b20 vtec with a built head and keepint he rev's to about 7500 max cause im not changin pistons or rods

option 2 buy a type r bottom end and boot it to 8500
