automatic transmission woes.. conv. to manual?
 

My transmission died in my 2001 civic 4dr.. the car was making a whining noise and i had an appointment to get the timing belt and business changed because the mech said he thought it was the tensioner.. but it turned out to be the transmission fluid pump (that's what they told me).

So anyways I got them to find a used transmission, maybe i should have got a rebuilt but they actually told me that either way it was just a chance you take.

I get this used transmission put in and from the minute i drive away i notice it takes a long time to shift from 2nd into 3rd (especially when cold), like my last one started doing a month before it died.

There's a 3 month warranty on this new (used) transmission, but i'm just so worried. What if it dies after the warranty? I still have money to pay on this car :(

Lesson learned is next time I am buying manual.. i thought driving automatic would be a break but it sucks. i don't mind the extra work.

But really my question is.. if this used one dies and it falls on me to put ANOTHER one in, is there anyone anywhere who can convert it to manual?

It's very possible to convert to manual.. However it's quite a bit of work and in my opinion not worthwhile..

You would have to buy a lot of stuff on top of just the transmission. IE - The shift linkage / shifter / inside 5spd shifter console / slave cylinder / clutch lines / master cylinder, clutch pedal, etc etc.. In the end, it'll be a lot of work to install everything and you are actually decreasing the value of the car. 5Spds generally cost less than autos to buy.

In my opinion, if the car runs well enough, sell it and buy a manual car.

almost any mechanic can, ur looking about about 800 roughly for labor, i know of a place that can do it for like 500 about, but its styill alot of labor plus parts

for not much more, you could do a D series vtec engine WITH 5spd tranny for that price.....

imo, 5 speed for the win. auto sux

take it back now before the 3 months are up and say it doenst shift correctly. if they dont replace it, sell the car and get a standard trans car. **** a swap its too much work on a honda you can easily get in a 5 spd.

I have done it. No power tools, no light, and a basic set of Job Mate tools. It's not THAT hard, especially if you were to do it in the proper conditions. There are just a lot of steps, and the hardest part I found besides the electrical, which is my downside, was the removal of various seized bolts. If you had power tools, that would obviously become a breeze.

not true, seized bolts often break when you put too much force on them without any heat.

i did bring my car back to the shop. they hooked it up to an ODBII scanner, saying they were looking for codes that wouldn't "stick" like "long shift" or "delayed shift" or something.

it showed nothing.. but it's DEFINATELY really lagging when shifting into third, most noticeable when cold. they say wait and see.

if this transmission dies just after the warranty expires i swear i am going to kill someone. i don't have the money for this crap :(

find another car with manaul and save the hassel

fry your tranny on purpose, then take it back!

your tranny is going to die again. its slipping going into the next gear, it will only get worse. its a defective clutch carrier getting eaten away, the pieces clog the pump and then goodbye tranny. when you start to hear that whining sound, its only a matter of time. The auto trannys in 01-03 civics are known to have issues, its all over the 7thgen forums. you should have gotten a tranny off a 04-05 as they fixed the problem in those years.

the thing with buying a used transmission in a newer car like an 01 is that usually those transmissions were taken out of a car that got written off. Transmissions can take quite a beating in an accident.
