Did she ever get a notice for the ignition switch recall, and if so has she had the repair done? If not, has she ever had any problems with the car stalling?

Could also be a dead battery, is there a clicking noise when she tries to start it?

Auto Civics are notorious for gear selector problems. it might appear to be in "park" but really isn't. Take the gear selector and go through all the gears and slam it back to park. then try to start.

Ya, I wanna know if there is a clicking noise... if not, 3 things come to mind, two of which have been covered already 3rd is the relay/fuses. Nothing she can do till you get there Niel. Then, check for the relay noise under the hood when she goes to turn the key... switch two relays and try again... if no noise, then could be the park selector or the ignition... more than likely the park selector.
