Any info would be great. D16Y8 to D16Y7 swap.

Hi all! New member and thanks for having me.

I did search to try and find an answer to my question but it seems the answer all go the other direction.

I just bought a 98 Civic Coupe Si had some internal engine issues. It had the D16Y8. I was able to get my hands on a 98 Civic LX engine for a really good deal and with only 131k on it. My questions are,

1) The D16Y8 is a vtec?
2) The parts I have from the D16Y8 are the intake (complete), wire harness, Exhaust manifold and oil pan. The rest of the engine is gone. So can I just put the intake, exaust manifold, oil pan, D16Y8 wire harness and use the D16Y8 ecm. Will all this work or what else would I need to do?

Thanks guys!

you'll get codes for the vtec system if you drop in the y7 (LX). I don't know what the good deal was for a motor with less power and not a straight drop in to your car, but if it was practically free and if the head was still useable from the y8.... basically a d series VTEC would be a better swap and you can get those at most jdm importers for like $400

Thanks for the reply ol Dusty.

The y7 was practically free. I was able to get it as a long block including accessories for almost nothing. My y8 had a major mechanical failure to the head and timing system, rendering the the head unrepairable. The plan is to eventially get the y8 back in with a new head when cash flow and time permits. I have been able to find the fix for the vtec bypass (haven't completed it), as well as have the new motor in the car. Everything went well with the transplant other the fact I have 1 connector(not inluding the vtec connectors) near the throttle body that I cant find a home for. I have looked around the engine compartment as well as a couple friends and we can't find a spot for it. Its a black/blue yellow/black round connector. The info I have found on the net is making think this could be the IAC connector for a A/T? But I am confused because the car came M/T from factory.

ok well since you're going the route you've gone, I'm guessing you kept the intake manifold from the y8, which makes sense because otherwise I think you'd have problems with things like the throttle cable but I think you've kept the y7 engine harness on and that's why plugs and sensors might not be exactly lining up. As for the extra connector, look on the old motor, near where the alternator mounts. Is there a knock sensor in the block? How about on the new motor?

I have the old y8 intake and the old y8 harness installed on the y7 block and head. there where no extra sensors, all sensors etc where accounted for other then the y7 missing the vtec solenoid. The extra connector is not very long and is located at the throttle body and will only reachthe intake are so its shouldnt be too hard to find the location which is why I was leaning to the IAC valve for an A/T.

isnt this a downgrade?

Of coarse it is. The old y8 head is unusable and used y8 heads or engines are few and far between in my neck of the woods. By doing this downgrade it still gives me my car to drive while making the swap back to a y8 easy once the new head is found. Not to mention the old y8 had 367k on it.

As far as the wiring, i figured it out. I had the knock sensor connected to the IACV which left me with the extra plug. All plugs are now account for and connected.:D

I know as a mod I'm probably not supposed to direct you to other forums but when I lived out west I found vancouvercivics.com very helpful and quite a few guys on there from the interior BC. Some of which are also on D-series.org Not sure who still frequents those forums since I neither live in BC any more and the one D series I still own is older then 95% of the people on most forums, and I wanna rip that dead old d out and drop a b in anyway.... ramble ramble sorry, point is that on VCC you should be able to find a source for JDM engines, a 96+ D15B VTEC should be easy to find for around $400 and not only drop right in place of a y8, but rev just a smidge higher (7200 vs 7500) as well as give you an additional 3 whopping HP to the crank! I can't laugh to hard at a 3 HP gain, that would be more than a 3% gain in power for my d series.
