Amsoil 10W-40 as MTF??
Hi guys,
I visited Altech this weekend and was hoping to pick up some Amsoil MTF for my gearbox. But it turns out the gentleman there recommended their 10W-40 engine oil as MTF instead. He said the Amsoil gear lube would kill my tranny if I pour it in, and that only the ITR tranny uses the Amsoil gear lube.
So I'd like to see what you guys think. Is that a common practice? Would their 10W-40 offer me the same kind of performance and protection for my tranny as their gear lube? Would the Amsoil gear lube really kill my tranny if I poured it in??
I'm confused!

Thanks Leitner. Anyone else? What about the comments that I heard before from someone claiming to have used Amsoil MTF in their gear box with good results? Was that their gear lube or their 10W-40?

crx is right honda's engine manual said if the honda MTF is not available you can use 10w-30 but why not just go with the honda fluid? correct me if i'm wrong 6$ a litre and i think you tranny would need 2.5L and with amsoil youo would be paying more.. save money and get the better stuff

80W90 us usually gear oil, but it's too heavy for Honda trannies.
Honda recommends their MTF or 10W30.
Others have had good luck with GM Syncromesh fluid for MT trannies in their Honda trannies. Helps smooth out shifts.
Saturns with 5 spds like mine apparently like synthetic ATF fluid. That's what I run in there, and I run Honda MTF in my Civic tranny.
Basically, if in doubt and your tranny is performing just fine, stay with Honda MTF. If you have problems, I'd recommend GM Synchromesh MTF. After that, you will want to investigate Redline, Amsoil, and Motul for Honda applications. But again, if you are not having any problems, then why change.
BTW, sorry... from now on, I'll have very limited posting abilities.

the brake one is for the brake the other one that looks like brake fluid and is in the same general area is the clutch fluid. you use brake fluid in the clutch fluid as well, it's the same stuff.
the tranny fluid is not as easy, since there is no reservoir. You take out a bolt on the tranny to drain it, then you take another bolt out a little bit higher to fill it. tighten the lower bolt and start pouring in MTF - once it overflows, let it overflow until it's done (making sure the car is level!!!!) and then close the top bolt. you'll need a flexible funnel!
j9chan... not leaving you guys just that I took on another position in the company, so there is work to be done.

exactly right punk
I dunno mang, maybe Amsoil has a non-synth product, or maybe they have a Honda tranny product with friction modifiers
in any case, synth engine oil in a tranny is killa

The Amsoil 10W-40 that I got from Altech was just their regular synthetic motor oil, and the gentleman there told me that's what they use in all the Honda trannies... Could somebody confirm that's gonna be fine for my tranny before I pour it in? :S

Guys, see what I found on Honda-Tech... This dude is putting 0W-30 Amsoil into his tranny and he said it smooths things out! Could somebody comment on this.... is he bs'ing or what??
might be as simple as low transmission fluid... i run amsoil series 2000 ow-30 synthetic motor oil in my tranny.... it helps it shift smoother and it will last longer. when i had my transmission built, this is what my mechanic used and he said not to use anything else in it if i wanted it to last years and years to come. Just my $0.02 though, I'd definatly check the fluid though, and if you can get the Amsoil, it would be a lot cheaper than trying to rebuild or what have you

Here's another dude!
I run synthetic b/c it flows better and b/c it "gives" you more HP/Torque than regular oil. My friend saw a 5% increase throughout his entire powerband when he went from the oil that Honda put in his prelude to Amsoil series 2000 0w-30.... and when used in the tranny, shifts are smoother. That's why most people run synthetic. at least, that's why everyone i know runs it
