All about oil...

Regular, Synthetic, or Semi?

5w30 or 10w30 (for the spring/summer)?

Castrol or Quaker? (redline or others are not an option)

Just looking for everyone's personal preferences.

Holy cow, this subject has been totally exhausted. I should have done a search first... apologies.

I *did* read every single post and link above though and I didn't find the answers to the following questions:

1. A friend owning a BMW was told by his dealership NOT to replace his synthetic oil too soon (below 8000k) because that's when the oil will begin to reach its peak efficiency. What's that about? I do flush mine ever 3000miles (american civic) religiously, that's around 5000k. Even if it's a waste of cash, only the best for my baby.

2. Filterwise, I use the Formula1. In one of the posts above, it is said that nothing beats Honda OEM. That true? Get that from the dealership or where?

3. Disposing of the oil. That's something not mentioned anywhere. Where do I dump it (I live in the GTA).

Other than that, I will stick with my castrol 10w30 summer / 5w30 winter. I made the switch 2 changes ago (she just turned 120k)

What an informative forum... I have a feeling google is not spidering the site properly considering all the good s**t posted here and the relatively low rankings the site gets.

It depends what you're searching for really. general terms and common phrases won't get you many results. Some TCC threads are ranked very highly by google, actually.

run castrol gtx 10w30 for summer...and oil does nto reach efficiency..lol that is the stupidest thing ever...good old bmw mechanics..man as someone gogin into the trade I feel embarrased to be labeled as a mechanic from that statement...the whole extended oil drain is retarded to me the whoel point of synthetic to me is for maximum protection nto to save money... I want the best oil runnign threw my motor with a constant clean supply...so I'd change mine the same as dino oil.... soem peopel are so stupid when it comes to oil..then longer you put heat and pressure on an oil (running in an engine) the more broken down it get's period so change it!!!

I think they were saying that "the oil begins to break down and offer optimal protection after the initial 5-8000km"
I'm just trying to seek help from you guys to extinguish a seemingly dumb myth. So far, I'm not the only one to think it's senseless. Thanks for the feedback dingus. Especially since you do that for a living?

How about places to dump the oil? I would full up 100 gallons of used oil before I dump a drop outdoors.

There is a place in Hamilton where you can take your used oil, not sure what it is called or where it is though... My dad takes ours there when the big drum in the shop gets full.

Most Canadian Tires wont take your used oil from home oil changes etc. thats why I just drop it off there at night, atleast I know its gonna get properly disposed of in the morning.

*this option is my choice and its merley a suggestion, any consquences of doing so are the sole liability of the person commiting the act.*

They've taken my oil at the one at weston/401 and keele/st.clair. it helps to ask one of the younger guys, and not one of the managers. and showing some leg doesn't hurt either

Showing some leg would probably result in me being forced to ingest my own oil.

I'm surprised to hear that there isn't a standard method of gettin' rid of the stuff.

I think I called a Mr. Lube once and asked to speak to a manager, he said he won't take more than 2L for free.

Cynikal'si idea is more appealing since i live around the corner from a CT
