alignment results...camber question

i just got an alignment done at wheel and tire zone (thanks gatherer) and they could get most within factory specs...however camber is still out.

front right: -1.56 (went in with -1.38, spec is +1.00 to -1.00)
front left: -2.09 (went in with -2.27, spec is +1.00 to -1.00)

rear right: -2.74 (went in with -2.43, spec is 0.00 to -2.00)
left rear: -2.55 (went in with -2.77, spec is 0.00 to -2.00)

not sure why they added more negative camber to left rear and right front.

anyways my question is how fast will this extra camber wear the tires. i mean i know i have to rotate them freq but a camber kit is not in my forseeable future. i may look into the rear washer trick to help add some positive camber to get it within the -2.00 specs)

it will add up quickly..its not that the tires wear that much faster, its that they wear unevenly

imported_alwaysoverkill 14-Apr-2005 11:01 PM

thats ok as long as its not like wearbar on the inside edge and new on the outside. toyo's, i'm only gonna get two summers out of anyways, three if i'm very lucky, so i'll just rotate them every oil change (8000km - amsoil synthetic) and it should be fine.

No matter how you rotate your tires, the inside will always be the inside. Therefore, you'll be wearing down the inside of the tire no matter what u do.

BTW, what springs do you have? -2.7 degrees is a lot of wear.

The reason the camber is different from side to side is most likley because there's something slightly bent or worn.

I wouldn't wory about the slight difference in camber for now unless your car isn't steering straight.

camber is affected by Toe...

without a camber kit on your car all they can adjust is the toe and as they set that the camber changes slightly

anyways a camber kit is what you need but Toe will wear out tires quicker then camber. if I showed pictures of my tires you'd swear I had bad camber but in fact it's my crazy toe settings

a camber kit is like $300 all installed and ****....my toyo's are only $75us a tire so it'd just be cheaper for me to let them wear and replace them in 2-3 years (2-3 summers) then to get a camber kit. plus it rubs alittle on the top of the fender (removed the liner clip up there) so more positive camber would cause even more rubbing. its all good, handles amazing so i'm just gonna leave it.

what springs u have?

H&R sports, 1.75" front/1.5" rear drop

listen to that man... if it's tires you are worried about just fix the toe... camber's effect on uneven tire wear is minor and no where near the damage bad toe will do

i had -2.5 camber on the two front tires after an alignment and the insides of my tires wore out pretty bad but i probably do more driving then anyone on this board so it makes sense.

imported_alwaysoverkill 17-Apr-2005 02:03 PM

toe they were able to get ok, in fact only one toe setting was out, but that would explain why the camber changed as they had to adjust some toe and one setting was way out before i took it in.

i'm really not worried about it, handles amazing and it barely rubs on the top of the fender lining. plus like i said, $75us a tire ($93cdn) so when the wear to a point i can't use em anymore...i'll just replace em. for the price of a camber kit, i can replace all four tires in 2-3 years when they are worn so bad, so its just not worth it for me to buy one.

by the way, i'm in no way saying they didn't do a good job...they did, its my suspension drop that is why the camber won't go to within specs....wheel and tire zone, although alittle expensive did a good job and pretty fast too.

how much do you drive though?

imported_alwaysoverkill 17-Apr-2005 03:01 PM

10-15K a year most likely....maybe 20K tops. thats why i'm not worried. if 40K a year, i'd be buying the camber kit :D

shlammed 17-Apr-2005 03:42 PM

yea i wouldnt worry much...i can do 10-15k in 2-3 months

Adjusting toe has nothing to do with camber settings....
A proper alignment is done setting Caster, then Camber then toe last. I do about 3-4 alignments a day on a very good laser alignment machine and setting the toe does not affect the setting of the camber. Get a proper adjustment kit and have it installed. Negative camber will wear on your tires just as bad if not worse than toe being out.
