Air Box Material?

Just a quick question, what is the airbox made out of? Is it abs plastic?
And if so, would the abs plastic found at home depot be safe to use in an engine bay?
Thanks.

Sort of. I'm not sure if your familiar with the comptech icebox intake, but im trying to recreate that. I have a short ram tube that i am trying to attach to my air box, and i found an abs plastic elbow at home depot that fits just right. I am only concerned with the safety and durability of the piece.
It would only be a slight extension of the airbox so thats why im thinking, if the box is made of the same material, then there really shouldn't be a problem.
Hope this clarifies the situation.

I'm in the process of making one too. I have an ITR airbox I'm using.

Well, that write up is good, but it's only for the lower part of the icebox. The part that goes from the air box to the bumper light.
I however need to know if it's safe to use abs plastic to connect a stainless steel pipe from my airbox to the intake manifold.
So it would go like this: Air box -> ABS plastic elbow -> Stainless steel pipe -> Intake manifold.
Btw dumbassi, are you using a flat drop in K&N filter or a cone one?
Thanks.

The ITR box uses a cone filter similar to the Comptech Icebox. I'm just going to use the stock pipe to connect the box to the IM. It's alot bigger in diameter then a Civic one (3"). I'm trying to mount it correctly though. The box is a different shape the a Civic one and doesn't bolt down the same way. I have to figure out a bracket to bolt it down.

Have you thought of using a short ram tube instead of the PVC?

Here is a good link for you.

Thanks for the great link.
I already am using a short ram tube. I just need to find a way to connect the tube to the air box.
I found an abs plastic elbow at home depot that seems to fit, but im not sure how safe the abs plastic is.
Also, im thinking of using the ITR box as well, because the 99 el one isn't very practical. First off, i can't fit a cone filter in there. And second, the pipe from the box to the IM is some weird funky oval shape :P i think its like 2.75" by 2.25"
Now im replacing this pipe with a 3" short ram tube, but the inlet to the box is still that weird oval shape.
Btw how much do itr air box's go for?

I paid $40 for everything. The box, filter, arm and the resonator and all the extra pipes. I think Astronboy has an ITR box for sale. I'm pretty sure any Integra box will be the same. I think the only difference is that the ITR arm is bigger in diameter.

I just came up with another question.
Is there any difference between a flat drop in k&n filter, and a cone k&n filter? Would the cone give better performance, air flow, more air, etc?
Because i think i found a way to attach my airbox to the short ram with that abs elbow i bought, but it would mean that i would be unable to use a cone filter. Just wondering if there is a significant difference between the two.
Thanks.
