Aftermarket LSD

how hard would it be to install an aftermarket LSD in my JDM b16 Y1 transmission? im tired of merging with traffic and pegging one side.

i was looking at the OBX lsd(cheap immitation of quafie) and i was wondering if i could install it myself. i have no experiance inside of transmissions but i do have mechanical ability, i have had the whole car apart and did the b16 swap myself.just not been inside a tranny(i have dont clutches just not inside the tranny housing).

also, what limited slip should i order for my CABLE Y1 transmission? and what else would i need once i get the LSD to do the install properly?

if anyone else has any pointers/oppinions on LSD's or their install shout.

Thanks peeps

-Matt

you can jsut get a cheap phantom grip insert...or go and get the quafe....you need to pull out everything from the tranny to get to the diferential....not to bad cause you keep everythign on the shafts etc...it's not to bad but still is a bitch and I woudln't bother....if you want to though get a good manual cause there will be certain procedures tools possible.

I bought an OEM piece off eBay for $250us. I'd try there first. OEM quality for super cheap.

Look up eBay seller Japandy ... he useally has them for B16

how strong would they be? would they take much more power than stock without blowing out in the tranny?

you have a b16 I dont' think you will be making any lsd breaking torque any time soon..lol...even then you will spin your tires..aslong as you dont' have a puck disc with slicks you should be fine if you don't pull rice boy clutch drops every 2 seconds with 400 hp and slicks..lol

the OBX isnt identical to the quaife unit, someone pulled one apart and it had alot of parts reversed and parts not torqued properly etc.

I'm in the market for LSD as well.. But I'm pretty sure I won't be exceeding 250whp so I'm thinking of buying either OEM or buying a TYPE-S tranny and selling mine.

OEM LSD YEEEEESSSS!! I more vote for brotha JapAndy

OBX... NOOOOOO!!!! have you read threads on them?? improperly torqued bolts, improperly installed spring nuts (rendering them ineffective), etc etc...

install is pretty hard, you have to reshim the whole tranny case, setting backlash and clearances and so on. not impossible with a Helms and a feeler gauge and... on of those... what's it called.... DIAL gauges.

Setting the clearances on a differential really isn't that hard, even easier with a selection of shims. You just have to measure everything up properly so your not doing the job TOO many times.

Helms manual is your friend.

Oh, and Bruno, it's a Dial Indicator =0), people especially in the industry look at you "funny" when you say dial gauge, unless you know, your into that sort of thing.

but has anyone north of the border bought one (OBX) and have any personal experience?

How screwed up can they truly be?

It sure would make winter driving a whole lot more pleasant than spinning the inside tire in 1cm of snow.

I'm 80% committed to getting a seperate d-series tranny for the OBX LSD installation so that I have my original tranny as backup in case of failure, and to minimize downtime for the installation of the unit into the trannny.

Any supporters for this idea?

Anyone have a layout of the OBX design so that the correct assembly of the LSD can be confirmed or corrected if bolts / washers / pins / rings are improperly installed?

thanks for your ideas

OBX, all of the way. don't listen to the fools that say its a cheap imitation of a quaife. its a good quality part, has a lifetime warrantee, and, has supported over 600whp on a turbo hatch in the US. i'm talking, 7K clutch dump on a motor that makes 550+whp and a 150 shot of NOS. if that makes it poor quality, then send me a dozen. it is by far the best aftermarket deal of the last year or so.
