Aftermarket Ignition system (MSD,Mallory)

hey guys ive been lookin into doing an after market ignition on my D15B..
what should i do.. i do not know much about it but i was talking to a guy who said "just buy a MSD cap and blaster coil" or he said just buy a MSD igniton box....
now what would you reccomend.
one thing i wonder is if i buy a msd cap and blaster coil what do i hook the coil up to. or what do i hook up my igniton box to....i was asking the fellow at Proformance improvements he just said "its real easy." thats all i got from him so any one with some insight as to what i could do to give me the best over all proformance will be awsome..

thanks in advance guys

Yes performance improvements has just about every part you can think of, but their prices are a little high, imo...

Just a quick question, how mechanically inclined are you? Ignition systems can be easy to setup and work on if you know how....

As for the performance gains, I'm wondering myself what the benefits/gains are...

I know it helps for a more complete burn, but what kind of power gains do you get?

Most of the guys a performance impormenvets dont know wtf there talking about.

There are a handfull of them that do infact know what there talking about though.. from my expereience little pricey though.

MSD provides a better spark at launch, there is a msd 2step witch provides launch controll. It just ensures you get a better burn when needed. IMO why do you need one for your setup?

If you are running NA, not much point to install those ignition system. I did mine, and my butt dyno couldn't tell the difference before and after.

well the main reason for me wanting one was because when im in the higher RPM range (5000 on) it seems like my rpm's are jumpy.. almost like a mis fire..after reading this...aftermarket ignition souh eliminate that......am i going about this the wrong way?

^^^ You may be looking at this the wrong way. I would do more in terms of tune up and maintenance to fix the problem. I had considered doing the MSD crossover, but 've read too many topics on MSD pre-maturely killing Ignitors on Hondas.

If the RPM's on the Tach are jumpy, I would probably check your stock distributor. A jumpy tach is a commom symptoms for an ignitor or possibily coil. The problem can also be caused by a bad cap and rotor.

As for MSD, your stock ignition should be good up to at least 350whp. I've seen and tested this myself. But there are benifits:

- better combustion
- good cold start ability
- 6AL has a limiter function (incase you have to limiter)
- 6BTM has Boost Retard (but Chrome can handle this better)
- possible 2 step (if you buy the correct modules or digital units)

good luck

I'd get some good spark plugs and wires, new cap, and a blaster coil and see how she runs after that...

best advice yet.

Stock ignition is perfectly fine for setups under 500whp. Your missfire is likley a problem caused by lack of mainteance.

Get yourself a OEM cap and rotor.. FROM honda, not partsource, plugs wires, and if the problem persists, test/replace the coil/ignitor.
