Advantages of a Lightened Flywheel
 

As the topic states...

I am able to get my hands on a new lightened flywheel for my d series im just wondering what advantages have such a flywheel will give me.

it should free up some rotating mass and the car should rev and accelerate faster, but the rpms will also drop faster

What I also learned (this may not applied to all vehicle) is that light flywheel sometimes don't make a match at start up, so you get this over-crank noise. But, that could also be a worn flywheel.

It is just that my old D16 flywheel never gave me that problem, and this light flywheel I have now has given me about, 6 times within a year.

Tranny work is nice. I would do flywheel and FD at the same time.

Yea rpms drop like crazy compared to the stock flywheel cause ive done mine and noticed the difference.

I don't think it is that crazy, heh. Say you want to shift at 4000rpm, by the time you do so, you might be starting at 2300rpm.

LOL that just means your not shifting fast enough. (just kidding, I thought I would add my $0.02 ahaha)

True, that's under normal shifting conditions. City driving and whatnot. :D

No more waiting for the rpms to climb....you can snap it to the limiter and back to idle in like a second or two!! hehe.....can't wait to get one...

im not kidding....Dave is right. the only thing is that you may stall easier because you dont have the centrifugal force like the old one.

It's not centrifugal force, it's inertia :wink:

what are the disadvantages if any??

I have noticed a huge difference in mine...especially the last few nights...with it being cool out...throttle response is nice and the supercharger screams...I did the fidanza flywheel and the rpm's crank fast....love it....

Its not because its a lighter flywheel its because your starter is no good or the guy half assed lightening ur flywheel. I have a fidanza 7lb flywheel and its awesome, no problems whatsoever

im running a 8.5lb its sick

its a tradeoff ... when your driving at slow speeds in traffic, shifting from gear to gear is not smooth like you would like it to be, but when you have the opportunity to accelerate without any restrictions ... thats when you'll be glad you have a lightened flywheel :yummy:
