96 Civic HB Shift Points! Is this normal?
Hey, if anyone out there can help me out with this. I have a 96 civic hatchback cx and I was wondering if anyone out there can tell me if their gears are set up the same as mine. I bought the car used a while back and its always been like that and it seems the gears are really far apart! In first, I am hitting like 70km/hr at around 6600rpm and in second I am peaking about 115km/h at like 6800 rmp and in third I am doing like 155 at the same rpm. In fourth it goes to like 190 or so and fifth. Well, I ran out of road! I know my buddys 95 hatch goes to like 50, first, 80 second, 120 third and so on and my dads 2004 civic s1 is like 50 first, 90, second and 130 third when you push it.
If anyone can post their shifting points that would help me out so much. I am just curious if this is a stock set up or if there were modifications done! Or is my tach wrong and I am screwing my enging binging it up. For now its sweet cause at like 80-90 I can drop her to second and pass ppl like a bullet!Well, any help would be awesome!

Anyone else hear the sound of a timing belt breaking and valves bending?
On a serious note, since you have a hatchback cx you have different internal gear ratios in your transmission in comparison to an SI model. The two cars you compared yours to both seem to have SI transmissions in them, and therefore their maximum speed in each gear is different than yours. The max speed in each gear that you posted seems in line with the gear ratios found in a stock cx/lx/dx 5 spd transmissions.
As for trying that on public roads

Check in your Civic Manual that came with the car. In there it should tell you the Top Speed for each gear. In my 96 EX sedan, it said fourth maxed out at 190 km/h. I can't remember what the others were.

I don't have my manual, maybe I can pick one up from a dealership. Yeah, I guess it makes sense, but is it a benefit that they are ****** so far apart? I guess cause the engine is weak you need to keep it revving high so the ford fiestas don't smoke you. Any more replies would be appreciated for comparison!!! keep them coming!

Well no, but that would negate the fact that the 5th gear gets you really good fuel mileage. Being geared for the moon doesn't help your acceleration through the gears either.
Besides, for how little fuel a stock sohc D16 uses, I'd much rather the benefit of improved acceleration that the SI transmission offers rather than the fuel economy of the y7 transmission.

yeah, good point. My 5th gear is useless!!!! Oh well, I don't really need it that much! If I swapped a y8 head on my and got some vtech goin then wouldn't that help too having longer gears? If I had closer gears, would my acceleration be faster?
Its sweet when you can drop it to second going 85km/hr... and the si beside you has to drop it to 3rd! Talk about seee ya!

Your acceleration will always be faster with shorter gears. And No Vtec's don't like Long gears. If you don't rev the **** out of them you might fall out of Vtec when you shift. The Only need for long econo gear's woudl be Gas Mileage(Obviously) and Turbo's. Turbo's liek longer gears because the Torque causes traction issue's. Also when under boost its better to have longer Gears because your powerband is fatter and you can take advantage because you have torque. Si's and Vtec's need the quick gears because they have a lack of Torque and the Powerband is smaller.
