95 CX - Engine mods, where to start?

Hi, I'm a newbie;

I have a 95 CX with 311,000 KMs on it.
I have to change my timing belt and it has got me thinking what I could possibly do to modify the engine.

Swapping in a VTEC engine would be ideal, however they appear to be a very hot commodity and therefore pretty pricey.

Is it even worth modifying a d15 series engine?
Presently the existing engine has a noisy valve when the engine is cold. A friend of mine suggested that this is probably a collapsed hydraulic valve lifter.

My idea - because my CX is my daily driver, I am thinking of buying a used b15 engine and peforming a rebuild/mods on it and then once in running order performing a swap.

Has anyone done this? Is my engine the same as the pre 92 civic and crx engines?

Thank you for the help, this site kicks butt!

John

hydralic Valve lifter??????

try just doing a valve adjustment on it....

ohhh and tehre is no b15's .. I'd suggest doing a b18b swap and being happy forever ...

I was about to post a comment on my own post - I am tool - the vavles are... ummm... easily adjusted... ok, so I probably do an adjustment and my present block can have the mods applied to it.
(doh... feel like an idiot)

Can cams from a crx engine be swapped in?

I don't see the point in swapping a CRX cam into your d15....they have almost the same specs...if not exactly the same.

I would either swap a VTEC head on your d15 (mini me), swap it out altogether for another d series, or do a b series swap.

It really all depends on how much money you want to spend.

all I did to my d15 was intake. Nothing else is worth it. I'll rack up the milage on this engine then swap it for like the b18 someday. ah well, im happy with my slow torquless ride for now!! :D

The engine noise when cold is piston slap, when the engine is cold the pistons are not up to spec yet, when they warm up the get a little bigger to take up the slop, until then the piston is too small for the hole that is worn out. I put a jdm d15b in a 96 cx as well and I ported it with a five angle valve job and it made the b18 look stupid. It was just as fast as a gsr. It costed an engine, tranny an ecu and a jumper wire harness from skunk2 to change the car from obd2 to obd1 with install it was 1500$ I did the install myself. I had to change the tranny because the cx tranny has to high a gear ratio, you would shift from first at red line to second 3800 rpm not even in vtec so si tranny is a closer gear box. Even if you changed just the tranny with your stock engine you would be happy. I did that first before the motor. I have lots of experence with that mod so pm me if any other questions
