88 wont start
k its a 88 civic hatchback

i bought it 2 months ago.. guy told me the main relay might need to be changed
last month i was playing the stereo while i was cleaning the car (bad move) tried to start the car it wouldnt start.. so i pushed it in the garage
the car is at my moms house i moved to a new place and havent put insurance on the car yet
so anyways today i tried to start it by boosting it and it wouldnt work so i went to crappy tire and bought a new battery still wont start...
i put the key in and the lights go on and i turn the key and it wont crank

If it cranks and doesn't spark, most of the time is spark or fuel problem.
If it doesn't crank most of the time it could be your starter.
U said that your main relay is dying? They are common for these Honda. It happened to my old car. It sometimes starts and sometimes it doesn't. I just wait until the car get's colder and try again. If the guy u brought it off said there is something wrong with the main relay. I would start at that first. Is the humming noise u were talking about, is that your fuel pump that u were talking about when u had the key on and just about to start it? That's normal. To check if it's your alternator. Get a voltmeter and check how many voltmeter u are getting. Should be 13.50 min to around 14.5. Anything under 13 or around 12 the alternator is not charging. See if the battery cable is full of crap in there. U should clean that off if it's dirty. Then try again.

so you turn the key and it just clicks?
Generally that means there isn't enough power getting to the starter.
Ensure that the battery ground is connected to the transmission properly.
Ensure the battery POWER + is connected to the starter properly.
Boost the battery and try to start it.

check all grounds like the one on the thermostat housing and the battery and the valve cover my 89 hatch would start one day cause of the valve cover ground was crap but it later turned out that there was other bad grounds
