2nd thread... more info on my heat problem... PLEASE Help if you know

hey, so i have the b18c1 in my ek as some of you guys may have read my previous thread about how i thought my thermostat was bad, but i haven't had a chance to get it changed yet and the problem wasnt so bad i guess cause its been pretty mild out...

now, i have more info...

ever since its gotten much colder, whenever i am driving whether down the street or on the hwy if i have my heat off and blower at 0 or 4 it doesnt matter it starts to get cold... as soon as i turn it off, within maybe 10 sec it slowly goes up and then maybe 30 seconds sometimes its already back tio the middle...

my concern is my block might still be cold eventhough its halfway uip and before i do the thermostat this weekend, you guys think thats what it is???

i was thinking maybe something to do with the rad, low collant, air pockets etc... , but whenever i have the temp on cold it never happens and i assume it would happen regardless of what temp i have my climate control set to.

i appreciate the help once again ahead of time... hopefully you guys can help!!!

Ya its the t-stat. Change it. If you think its the rad, that has to do with cooling, not heating. Do you know what a thermostat does? If not, its a switch. When you start the car, the thermostat is CLOSED. If the coolant is hot enough, it will melt a wax ball inside of the thermostat causing a valve in the t-stat to open. If you look where it is, you'll see that if it is not open, it only flows coolant through the block/heater core while CLOSED, once the coolant gets warm enough to open the valve then it runs through the rad ensuring that the coolant doesnt get too hot. By always having cooler coolant, you're working your engine that much harder. Should have changed it along time ago. Trust me, it will make the world of difference.

olds is right, thermostat most likely. if not thermostat, then looking at headgasket.

.... olds is right about everything except the ball of wax part

oh just so you know, oil contamination in the coolant will immediately make your thermostat fail. the coolant must be 100% clean and of the proper mix.

B.. he's right.. its called a wax pellet therm. There a pellet of wax thats enclosed in a chamber, when it heats up it expands and pushes against the spring.

It's the most common type of thermostat around...

wow no ****, I just looked it up. I always assumed because of the longevity of a thermostat that it was some kinda bimetal contraption. I learned something today

ya I would think the samething if I didn't learn it in class. I'm pretty sure there is a bi-metallic coil thermostat, not sure how common it is though
