Phantom Grip LSD conversion kit
Has anyone done or heard of this??
Can I get this done to my car ('96 cx-g hatch)?
Need to get the massive power I have in my car to the ground

umm, from what I've read on CSi, under numerous occasions, the Phantom Grip will break under heavy load, and then it's buh bye to your tranny
Most people try and stay away from the Phantom Grip only because it's not truely a LSD but more like differential shims. But I'm sure bbarbulo and other people have more info than me

ryuujin, don't believe everything you read on CSi. Slvr-Bullet, Phantom Grip are two spring loaded plates that fit between the diff gears and they deflect under load causing the gears to lock up. The rate of the spring will determine at what level of spin it will lock. This is unlike any other "LSD" out there. It's cheap to buy, easy to install, and uses a special hardened metal to prevent damage to either diff gears or itself.
Two other type of LSD are helical and clutch. CUSCO and KAAZ make clutch type LSDs that require maintenance and are very expensive. Quaife and OEM type R are helical, but are also very expensive AND REQUIRE RESHIMMING THE TRANNY!!! That means you have to reshim evey gear and check clearance with a feeler gauge. The Phantom Grip does not require this.
Horsepower TV used it on Project Focus, and Sport Compact Car used it on Project 200SX Nissan. It's also used extensively by folks who race odd cars and there isn't an LSD made for their car. So Phantom Grip has been used in racing for quite some time. I think for like $250-275USD, the Phantom Grip is a helluva deal, esp if you end up going to a B-series and the D-series tranny is useless. Besides, D-series trannies are cheap, so even if you blow it up, you're only out $200 for a new one

But the bottom line is, can I put this on my stock tranny since it does not have a LSD or anything for that matter?
I just want a more balanced power distribution. I hate that torque steer I get

Yes, the stock tranny can take this... Beware, I'm pretty sure this thing is either on or off....I mean it's open or it's locked, there is nothing "LSD" about it. I still think it's great for the money and worth trying out unless you rally race your civic.

"Phantom Grip serves two distinctive functions in your street or race vehicle. First, it functions as a disc-type limited slip in cornering and braking. Disc plates exert pressure against spider gears using spring pressure to regulate the amount of slippage at the wheels. Helping to accelerate earlier, while exiting corners at a higher speed.
Secondly, the Phantom Grip works as a locker in hard acceleration. The disc plates pivot, locking spiders, causing both wheels to exert equal power to the road, providing less torque steer than an ordinary differential"
From my understanding, it's "open" when cornering and braking but "locks" up in hard acceleration.

I don't have any first hand experience with this either but I do have some concerns.
The blocks are put into the diff and use the diff casing as a thrust point to generate the friction to create the limited slip.
I have no doubts that it could be tuned to work, however, the diff was not designed for this kind of force(which could be substantial). The weak part of a d-series tranny is already the diff. Try it, but have a CAA card and a spare tranny at home.

I never knew that existed.
How much for one and is it easy to find?
And is it a labour intensive swap?
