2004 civic si tranny issues???
My dad has an 04 civic si and has had it since new for almost 3 yrs now and his tranny started making this growling noise getting more noticeable as the rpms go up... more noticeable in 1st and 2nd and the other gears it was there but not as noticeable... now its getting worse, but once you start getting up to speed its not nearly as noticeable... I know for sure its something with the tranny, but anyone with similar issues or had the same problem?
I talked to a mechanic I know and he said it was either a broken gear or i think main output shaft bearing???
I doubt broken gear very much because since new the tranny has never been shifted very hard on and i don't believe he has even ground a gear once on it. Warranty is up because it expired at 100,000km with the extended warranty.

one mechanic told me it was the output shaft bearing, but that was from a test drive... If you push the clutch in the noise stops as well. According to the write up from the site it says input shaft bearing and my buddy's textbook says output shaft bearing as well, but to me all that stuff is just generalized for all makes. Any ideas?

if its the input shaft bearing.. the noise will be there ALL THE TIME, in neutral, stopped, in gear, driving, etc.. the input shaft never stops spinning when the engine is on.
If its the release bearing it will only grind when the clutch is depressed
if its the pinion bearing it will only be making noise when the car is driving (will not make noise when it is stopped because the output shaft is not spinning)..
Either way, its not a small job to do this and if you arent doing it yourself it will cost a lot of money, personally id just get another tranny, the cost of the bearing, seal alone will be pretty much half-3/4 of a used si tranny anyways.
