13g or 14b turbo...much difference in potential?

hey guys i've been searching all over yahoo but all ppl talk about is the difference in the inlet housing i think...that the 13g is smaller...but i'd like to know about power/potential...

i'm lookin to hit around 200whp on my d16, i have a 13g turbo(off a 1g DSM automatic), wondering if it's worth just selling off and buying a 14b...remember, this is based on my power goals, so it's not like i want crazy power, sinc ei'm running on stock internals...

would a 13g require a considerably higher boost level to get the same power levels as a 14b? or would am i more or less in the same boat just sticking to the 13g since i already have it on me...

thx

if there is any in and out play or if the wheel doesn't spin freely I would sell it and grab a 14b. But if its in good shape.. why not just give it a try. 200whp is def. do-able.. but you may need 10+psi.

l2iceman 06-Sep-2006 11:14 PM

well from what i've seen, it spins freely, i dont think there's any shaft play...but i dont know how to look for that lol i just turned it around a few times up n down lol but spins freely no problems...

hmm...well the main concern i have is...if i go with the 13g, would it be hard to swap the turbo later to a 14b? cuz i know i'd have to get a 14b adapter plate for the HF manifold...but would that even be worth it? if i was to upgrade later on, i'd probably grab a bigger turbo if i'm not satisfied with the 13g...

cuz yea...10psi eh...hmm...i was thikning of tuning it at the stock psi the wastegate is set at...i think it's factory setting is 7psi...cuz i dontknow if i'm gonna want to increase the boost cuz wouldnt that be a bit more risky for stock internals? i know it's all in tuning, but i think the higher the boost, the more risky it gets no?

chris_si98 06-Sep-2006 11:19 PM

dont be concerned with psi.. i'd be concerned with the whp level instead.. and obviously the tune. Lean conditions and too much timing and blow little d's mighty quick.

the 13b and 14b flange should be the same, no? I can't see chrysler changing the flanges. If you upgrade.. just grab a bigger turbo. No need to upgrade to another small turbo. I'd upgrade to a t3 super 60 if your going to keep stock internals.

To check for shaft play.. grab the rod in the center of the propeller. Try to move it side to side, side to side mvmnt is fine, as long as it doesnt hit the compressor. What you want to be worried about is in and out movement. Grab the 'rod' and try to pull it out and push it in, if it does move, it's junk

ahhh ok, thanks, yea i think i'm gonna get zeeman to tune it after install...i'm also gonna get the ecu off him...i'm in talks with someone for the dsm 450cc injectors...but yea i'll check out the turbo tomororw, it's in the basement, too lazy to go downstairs now haha thanks.

zeeman pwns

l2iceman 06-Sep-2006 11:50 PM

lol yea he seems really nice and helpful when i PM'd him

l2iceman 06-Sep-2006 11:54 PM

o bytheway, as for boost gauge and other gauges for that matter, like a/f, oil n such, does it matter about brand? like if i got it off ebay, would that be a big difference? are ebay gauges like..more likely to brake down or not be accurate?

chris_si98 06-Sep-2006 11:56 PM

you can buy my stewart warner boost gauge.

Yes it does matter.. crappy gauges read imporperly. I've heard real bad things about autometer boost gauges (even though they are a good co.)

Get a boost gauge, EGT, Oil pressure gauge. Those are the 3 more important gauges you can get.

l2iceman 06-Sep-2006 11:59 PM

ah yea, i was plannin to get boost/oil pressure/air fuel ratio gauges, i guess i'll get the exhaust gas temp instead...hmm...yea i'm gonna buy 3 gauges from the same company since i want them to look the same lol i know it sounds corny but i want the 3 gauges to match lol

don't buy any of those gauges. just get a zeitronix wideband kit with the lcd display. it tells you lambda, afr, boost and egt. plus it is a wbo2! you should get one of these anyway. why not save all the hassle of installing all those guages and just put in one nice little lcd display.

:dito: wide band is always good to have

hmm...what about cost? lol how much is the cost of one compared to getting the 3 gauges?

dingus888 07-Sep-2006 10:56 AM

lol 13g and 200 whp shoudl not go in the same sentence on pump gas

that turbo is very small you might be able to get that if it's ported to **** and you can get it to hold 16-17 psi which it won't and you will be pumping pure hot air

14b would be better, bigger exhaust housing everthign etc

14b is a nice size for dd d series

dsm guy's have ran into the 11's and even 10's with this turbo (10's was gutted fwd laser apparently down in the states no actual proof)

l2iceman 07-Sep-2006 12:24 PM

wow there's that much difference between the two turbos?

o and yea, there's no movement in and out with the shaft in the middle of the propeller...so i'm guessing it's good for now...

i'll just try this, and later on if i get bored with it or something, i'll upgrade to a bigger turbo, but seein as this is the first turbo...i'd like to ease into it lol

The 13g and 14B are two different turbo's.
Both made by MHI but use different sized housings.
The 13g is a TD04 housing. These came on the auto matic turbo talons.
The 14B is a TD05 housing, it has more potential because you can pretty much turn it into a 20G quite easily. I had a spare one, got it ported in the compressor side and converted it to big 16G specs. Once I get my new motor in the colt, I'll be pushing 22psi instead of the 15psi I was with the 14B. More boost and more CFM. :)
Although the flanges are the same, the turbo's are not.
The lines are smaller, the center cartridge is smaller, it's a smaller turbo in general. You'll get more CFM out of the 14B as you would the 13G....

I have a slightly ported 14b for sale if you're interested.
