10W30 or 10w40???

95 honda civic SI whats better for the transmission 10W30 or 10w40?????

zeeman 10-Apr-2006 12:53 PM

ummm....how about Honda manual transmission fluid.
Sure you CAN use regular oil in a tranny, but i wouldn't use anything but honda MTF or GM syncromesh.

freshrice 10-Apr-2006 03:28 PM

really is it better to use the honda manual cause i know the oem specs say use regular oil in the transmission will it cause any problems to use the honda transmission fluid.....

zeeman 10-Apr-2006 04:48 PM

i've only ever used honda mtf in my car and i've had no problems. i've used 10w30 in other cars and had no problems.
i just checked my 1995 civic owners manual and it does say 10w30 or 10w40....thats weird. But then again, it does say to use ULEADED gasoline Pump octane of 86 or higher.
i wonder what honda's mtf is, it looks similar to 10w30 oil, but smells different, it smells like it works better....haha....or maybe it smells like money down the drain.....lol

honda dealers used to use 10w30 or 10w40.. but then they switched to MTF... I would recommend honda mtf

freshrice 10-Apr-2006 09:03 PM

I can answer this question.. Honda used 10W30 motor in their manual trannys for all the older cars..cant remember when the started the MTF.. its been so long since i last put 10w30 @ the dealer.. anyways MTF came out cause honda had a knocking problem in the trannys so thats when they developed the MTF. And now for the longest time we haven't had any more problems with the manual trannys

imported_Hybrid_Hatch 11-Apr-2006 12:32 PM

i have been running gm atf in my 5 spd trannys for almost 4 years... no problems at all

zeeman 11-Apr-2006 01:15 PM

GM auto tranny fluid? really?
Auto tranny fluid is different than manual tranny fluid.

imported_95bluelx 11-Apr-2006 01:39 PM

yah that's wierd, I highly do not recommend running ATF... gm syncromesh is good, I've never even heard of people trying atf in manual trannies, I'd say use honda or syncromesh

sohcnotec 11-Apr-2006 02:20 PM

Some older Fords recommend ATF for their M/T
ATF is still relatively thin like a 5W motor oil and it also contains a lot of detergents and cleaners (not really need in a M/T, I don't think?)

freshrice 11-Apr-2006 09:51 PM

interesting

SteveZ 11-Apr-2006 09:51 PM

gm syncro

imported_Cablerat 11-Apr-2006 10:05 PM
