pardon my ignorance, but what exactly does it do? measure your own speed??

Those sensors are located on our rear bumper. While you are backing up the sensor will detect how far your bumper to the other object. It then uses the meter reader to tell you how far you are from it. It will beep quicker the closer you are from it. It's a great mod.
