Turbo'ed Decision

Well guys, after a couple of years.. i have decided to invest money into a turbo..

Right now ive heard good things from Edelbrock. I have also heard of Revhard, and of course the lovely Ebay turbo's.

Now i want to clarify the setup, its a 95 civic, D16Z6 200K... yes i already know alot of you are saying dont waste ur time turboing it.. BUT i was looking at the Edelbrock turbo kits, and they fit all D, And B series motors.. so i would just swap the turbo if needed.. I was also hoping i would be able to find an ECU that i could just swap, instead of actually tuning.

Here is what ive looked at so far

Edelbrock turbo http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_...rformerx.shtml
or
Revhard.http://www.turbo-kits.com/92-95_civic_turbo_kits.html

or alot of ppl suggested ebay http://cgi.ebay.ca/92-95-CIVIC-D15-D...QQcmdZViewItem

what do you guys think?

i think you need to do more research.

first, there absolutely no way a d-series kit will fit a b-series engine without serious modification/changes. you'd be better off selling the d kit and getting a b kit.

second, you should not run the same tune on a d-series and a b-series. both engines are very different and will behave very differently to tuning.

third, i think if you have a little patience and do the proper research, you can build a far better setup for the same $ than what edelbrock or revhard can offer. ebay kits should not even be considered.

if you don't want to tune the car, DO NOT boost it.

You can't be cheap and expect to get the car the way you want it to be.

If you plan on boosting your car, make damn sure you've got a bunch of extra disposable income. What happens when your BOV decides it wants to stop working? What happens if your oil pan gasket decides to let go and you've now got a massive oil leak that needs to be fixed? What happens when you blow up your engine thats got 200,000kms on it? What happens when you need new tires b/c you smoked yours off b/c of the extra power? What happens when you need a new clutch b/c the one you've got now doesn't hold the extra power?

I tell you what happens. You'll either let the car sit until you can afford to fix it, or sell all of the parts you just spent good money on, or sell the whole car b/c your fed up with a car that requires so much attention. Or you'll go into debt trying to fix your car properly. I've seen this many times now.

Don't waste your time boostin your car if you're gunna half-*** it, or if you don't have the money to fix something when it breaks.

??... umm if u clicked on the Revhard link that i provided you, it shows a turbo kit.. which can fit a D16, B16, B18 & H22..

As for the tuning i have a general idea on how it works but i am no expert, so im not gettin on to that ..

Ok i see what your gettin at, BUT... since those kits are interchangeable.. it shouldnt matter?.. because once i do a swap i will build that engine proper.. i just want something i can whip around in for a while till the motor goes.. then swap the turbo over to another b series, and work from there...

I've got the Edelbrock kit on my D16z6 CRX and am happy with it thus far. One thing I did do was scrap the piggyback unit that came with the kit and chipped my ECU and had my car profesionally tuned by Neetronics. At 11lbs I make 225 whp/194 tq. Knowing what I do now I would piece togeather a kit myself instead of buying the kits available as it will be cheaper. I agree with what was mentioned above though, you NEED extra cash available for tuning, parts which will fail(clutch, driveshafts etc) and more importantly 94 octane, no lower. Turbo'd cars are not for the cheap or poor. One more thing D series kits do not fit B series engines, no way no how. This is fact.

that turbo kit does not fit all those engines, there is a different kit for each engine. that is just a list of applications they offer. if you look at the bottom of the edelbrock link you provided, you will see different part #'s for different turbo setups meant for different motors/chassis. THEY ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE.

yes, provided peices of your blown engine don't go out the exhaust valves and into the turbo.

as long as you stick to a d-series its interchangeable. The turbo manifold from your d-series kit won't fit the b-series engine, so to switch to the b-series you would need a different manifold and possibly downpipe and charge pipes modded a little bit to fit with the b-series engine.

If you start with a b-series and switch to another b-series only minor changes to the charge pipe will be necessary depending on which engine you're switching to.

go to turbod16 and read all the stickys on turbo basics. If you don't want to bother.. pay a shop $5000 and they'll hand you back a 200whp d16.

The exhaust head flange(and therefore manifold) is different between series (D,B,H) you will not be able to swap between them, cant be done.

Turbo's yes are interchangable but may not be efficient for dirrerent motors, a gt35 on a stock D will suck but an H will spool it well.

First thing you need to do is stop thinking about going FI cause its cool, and start with a power goal/budget in mind. You should put your build on hold till you are able to 100% decided on parts needed to make your goals (and identifiy what they do and how they will work with your setup)

as for swaping an ecu and not tuning, that is not an option so dont start thinking that it can be done. EVERY motor is different even if there both the same spec motor, one b18b vs another b18b will be different, i dont care what anyone says. If you dont tune the motor will blow, period.

I know you dont want to hear it but your not ready to have a boosted honda. you need to let the novilty of a turbo wear off and see the reality of what you want to get into.

Read maximum boost by corky bell, and visit turbod16 and then post back with some ideas.
