Gauge Question: Terminology

When a gauge is classified as:
"short sweep" "electronic" like this one here:
Auto Meter

what does this mean?

electronic vs mechanical
which is better?

as an example
a mechanical speedometer will have a cable that goes into it and turns, an electric one will be controlled by the ecu, and only wires will go into it.

is one more accurate than the other?

i was reading forums and it is said that mechanical should be used for anything that changes fast such as boost/vacuum....

and electric was best suited for more static numbers like water temp...

electrical can be more accurate, but if your having electrical problems at the moment of need...your kinda SOL and your guages wont be accurate.

It depends on what is being measured and the quality of the gauge as to which is more accurate.

For vacuum/boost, mechanical is usually prefered, cause it reacts instantly and is directly/mechanically connected to what it is measuring. Water temp, oil pressure, oil temp, are usually all electrical.
