B16a Turbo Setup

Ok, I remember asking about this earlier, I said I was aiming around 250whp while keeping the car drivable and not totally raping my mileage

Currently, I have a b16a, from a NA 2000 SiR/Si all stock other then a drop in filter
I want to keep the car quiet too if possible, So I need a list of parts I should be looking for, I also want to keep my AC =)

I can't find my old thread but I was told I'd need these parts

Turbo
Injectors
ECU(?)
manifold
inter cooler

So now I'm looking for suggestions on the actual make and models of the parts that I should be looking for so that I can start shopping

Thanks!

I think the most critical part of any turbo kit, is the tuner. So just make sure you go to zeeman for the tuning and chris_v2 for the install and you'll be golden

With regards to what parts you need, I'm sure someone will post something up. But this topic has been covered a million times, try doing a quick search on b-series turbo kits.

Are you looking to piece your kit together? Or purchased a pre-fabbed kit?

first off before turboing the car i would check the car over mechanically just to ensure the motor is going to perform well for you under boost. A simple check would be a compression test. The reason i say this is i see way too many people be disappointed in power or have issues with the car down the road maintence wise because there engine is not fit for boost.

Proper way to do a compression test is as follows....

-engine at operatiing temperature for proper clerances
-all spark plugs out to isolate that paticular cyclinder during testing
-fuel and ignition disabled (unplug distributor)
-throttle held wide open to reduce any intake restrictions
-crank 4-7 revolutions and note peak numbers and how fast the compression rises

The shreader valve in the compression tester should maintain proper peak pressure but its sometimes better/faster to do this with two people.

You are looking for the numbers to be consitent and good. I see alot of poeple doing compression tests the wrong way which will not compare to factory specs properly.

In regards to what is needed for a proper and reliable boost setup...

Map sensor - factory map sensor only reads to 11.xx psi so depending on what turbo you choose and your mechanical setup you may need to get higher map sensor such as a motorola or gm.

Fuel pump - most common would be a walbro 255lph intank

Injectors - on the cheap you can get dsm's and other options are precision, ID, Rc's

Couplers - I recommend getting a quality 4ply coupler

T-bolt clamps - I recommend getting t-bolt clamps for all your coupler plumbing to reduce coupler blowing off or any boost leaks

Charge piping - I recommend a .060" wall minimum and out of aluminum. The cheaper stuff that has a thinner wall tends to collapse when trying to tighten a t-bolt clamp down.

Intercooler - I would recommend a yonaka intercooler or precision. They come in various sizes and can definaly are efficiency for your power level.

Manifold - I would recommend a quality mini ram or ram horn for your goals

Wastegate - depending on if your turbo comes internally gated or not you will need an external. I recommend a tial 44mm or 38mm. Your spring will be dependant on how much boost you want to run. I would advise you also use a boost controller preferably a electronic. (ie. electronic boost control in neptune)

Turbo oil feed - stealth mode performance or can be made locally from fluid line

Turbo oil return - stealth mode performance! You also need to weld in a return bung into the oil pan which will require a oil pan gasket for installation again.

Watercooled- you turbo may possibly be water cooled and the plumbing for that can be done in various ways but is not overly complicated.

Gaskets - turbo, dp, wastegate, cylinder head

BOv- i recommend a tial 50mm or tial q 50mmm

Spark plugs - you will need colder heat range spark plugs i would begin with v-power 7s gapped to 28 or 30.

exhaust - i would recommend a 3" exhaust with a vibrant flat black muffler

turbo i recommend a g/t28, t3/4, 20g or big 16g, it really depends if you want room to upgrade or not.

Dp - recommend a 3"

Crank case vent - i would recommend a vented catch can setup

filter for the turbo - this can be done last as you will know how much room you will be working with.

Oil - i would recommend a 10w40

Ecu - p28 chipped with a conversion harness if you are not already obd1

I hope that covers everything or most of everything off the top of my head and gives you some where to start. Do some research on the following as there is alot of information.

Thanks for the info my motor is mechanically fit(I'm assuming) but will have it tested just incase, I burn about 1L of oil per 5-6000km(/oil change)

another note, I remember asking before about adding a GS/LS 5th gear to replace the one in the stock b16a tranny, and I was told to message someone who is good with tranny work(not that kinda tranny you sick bastards), I Can't find that thread anymore so who was that person?

Also can I add an LSD unit to my current tranny?

going to do some research on the turbos. does chris_v2 still come to this forum? I haven't seen him post for a bit. and yes zeeman for sure(still working on that tuning program but it's taking a back seat now since it got rejected as my project )

Yes, I'm still here.

And I can do your LS 5th gear swap for you if you'd like. I'm in Oakville at a shop with zeeman. If you'd like send me a PM man.

zeeman's b block is MOSTLY stock, and he's nailing 295+ whp or so (if my mind serves me right)

b+boost=fun.

as for ecu. neptune all the way. it's not even expensive. i ran crome before, and it did it's job...but i got neptune off zeeman, and once it was tuned, the car just seemed to run so much better. hard to explane......

zeeman! long time no see!
