I wouldn't recommend using a basemap for any period of time other than to get the car to a tuner.

A basemap is typically a program that was tuned for another setup, or a stock program modified (blindly basically) to meet the needs of your setup. Things that would be changed in the program would be injector size, which map sensor you are using (if other that stock), set a safe basic timing retard per PSI of boost (typically around 1 degree of timing retarded for every 1 PSI of boost) and add a linear increase of fuel across the boost portion of the fuel map(s).

The problem with basemaps is that since it was tuned for another setup in another car chances are that car had different fuel/timing needs then your setup in your car. This can result in a less-than-ideal running condition in anything other than the setup it was tuned for.

Another problem with basemaps is that when its just a stock program thats been setup for bigger injectors that drastically increases the chances that the program will be off from what you're car requires b/c different injectors require different battery voltage offsets. This problem is amplified even further when changing from a stock MAP sensor to an aftermarket MAP sensor such as a Motorolla 2.5 bar or AEM 3 bar. This is because different MAP sensors have a different voltage scale. Which means 5psi on the stock MAP sensor would be around 4.5 Volts (just an example, prolly not the exact reading) whereas with a Motorolla 2.5 bar that same 5psi would be around 3 Volts.

There are things such as "compensations" and "offsets" that need to be set specific to which injectors/MAP sensor you are using and in order to have these setting set properly these need to be set with the engine running while tuning the car.

These are just some of the reasons why I don't recommend using a basemap for any period of time other than to run the car initially to check for leaks or any problems and to get the car to a tuner so they can work their magic. Tuning is an absolute MUST on a boosted setup if you're at all concerned with safety or reliability, not to mention power and driveability.

Honsetly, you're taking your chances with running a basemap, it would be unfortunate to have something bad happen before you had a chance to get the car tuned. I would recommend not really going into boost too much and really taking it easy on the car until you can get the car tuned.

Here at HiVelocity Tuning we have an extensive collection of custom made programs for just about every engine combination and turbo setup developed from years of experience in tuning.
