yet another problem[not accelerating]

hi guys, well i came across another problem. when i try pushing the car harder, from 4000rpms or so the motor starts screaming as if it was running at 7000rpms+ and does not want to accelerate. in lower rpms the car is driving half decent but at higher rpms it slows down a LOt. i talked to a mechanic and he suggested clutch [he did not check it out since they were busy] but its not because the rpms do not slip up/down but the motor just does not want to accelerate any more after 4000.
i pulled my intake filter off and took a heat gun to it to since i figured it might have frozen up a bit but its still the same thing.
could it be related to vtec? or some sensors? in neutral it revs fine so im not sure.
any help would be appreciated.
PS. its a 93 civic/d16z6/manual/stock [i/h/e]

assuming your tach is working proper then the fact that it doesn't seem to be slipping would suggest it's not the clutch. I can't say for sure as it's not like I have your car here in front of me but maybe your having fuel issues. ever change the fuel filter etc?

Hmm I did not change the fuel filter but Steve said that you changed it for him.
So yeah if I'm trying to push it, I can't go any higher than 6500rpm. I would have to agree about fuel. I'm getting air, checked the filter and checked my plugs, regapped them so its all good. I will try and get a new fuel filter tomorrow. Thx for advice Dustin. Anybody else got any ideas?

hmm good advice, but if the problem is the fuel filter than why would i do that? its like replacing the motor every time you need an oil change :S

I'm not sure on your setup, but is it tuned properly? if your not able to really rev past a certain point and feels like your slowing, then your getting too much fuel dumped in.

at first it sounds like its ur clutch but if ur tach is working and ur not revving then maybe it could be that something is stuck open

do u still the same problem even though the car is warm?

maybe it might be a sensor problem in the distributor? Any back firing, when was the cap and rotor changed? any trouble codes?

No engine codes. Distributor and rotor with wires were changed Less than a month ago due to other problems. It was bogging and rpms would just drop to 0. After I changed plugs/wires/cap/rotor/ it went away. What sensor could it be? It feels like the air/fuel mixture is wrong, if I rev it hard it does pop once. I'm burning way more gas too. I was trying to pull fuel filter of but one nut is seized on. So my guess would be that its been a while since the filter was changed.

maybe one of your injectors are stuck open, and is just dumping a **** load of gas in causing the bog

this may or may not be part of it but did you fix the vac leak you get under braking? possible under higher rpm the vac leak becomes more severe and is causing the problem

I did not fix the vac leak because sometimes the rpms drop under breaking and sometimes they don't. My car is in a shop right now, my buddy is checking it out. It might be my cat, it couldn't be clogged or something. Well thanks for the help guys, ill see what the guy says if he doesn't find anything I shall return with all the things he checked.

well after i got the car on the hoist my buddy banged on my cat and i heard rattling. so we pulled the o2 sensor bolt out [since i only got one o2 on the header] and took it for a spin. other than its really loud it drove alright. so i will be pulling my cat out at home in a bit and i have a fake cat laying around at home so ill put that in for time being till i get a normal cat.
what would be a good cat to buy? dustin didnt you get the magnaflow highflow cat? will it still be fine for emissions? [srr i know its wrong forum for this but dont want to start a new thread.
i dont want another cheap cat that will fall apart on me 4 months later like this one and i dont want to spend 600$+ [since i heard a cat from honda goest for around that price :S ]
so any suggestions/tips would be greatly appreciated

yeah so i pulled the cat off, and indeed the honey cone [or what ever its called] was all messed. mesh inside was sideways and everything was sliding around inside. replaced it with hollow cat just for now and it drives much nicer
yet another problem solved. ill be posting in few weeks about something else. every time i get paid something goes wrong so....hahaha
thanks to everybody for help, greatly appreciate it guys!

yeah I bought the magnaflow cat and had it installed at hot rod scotts it's not just a bolt on part and I was still at CT back then and the welding machine there sucks ***** so I figured I pay to have it done right rather than risk burning a hole through it with a sh*tty welder. As for emmisions, it took 7 runs and it was a fresh cat, plugs, wires, oil/filter, run rite, seafoam and retarded timing (and I mean G.W. bush retarded) in order to get my car to pass but the motor was at around 520k then and it was fime on the CO but then NOx was double at first and only passed by 5ppm when it did.

I know I could have gone for a conditional pass and was about to but as a CT employee I didn't have to pay for all the tests, just the one that passed.
