V-tect ERROR CODE need help!

Hey everyone...

I am running a Vtec ERROR code P1256 Vtect System Malufunction...
It is an 01 civic SI with the D17 engine. Its not allowing me to go past 4000rpm. I did the diagnostics from the haynes manual in exception of the resistance on the solinoid itself. No corroded wires, the screen isnt plugged, the oil is fresh synthetic, and the air filter is fine. Has anyone run into this problem? any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Curt

I know you say the oil is fresh synth but just in case what is the level on the oil dip stick? it's possible that the recent oil change I'm guessing you just did has caused an oil leak at the drain plug or oil filter. Also what grade oil did you use? some people use really thick oil thinking they're protecting the engine but if it's too thick it doesn't get every where it should.

If vtec isn't kicking in it shouldn't cause the ecu to go into limp mode and rev till 4000rpm

It sounds like something a little bit more serious than vtec for it to go into limp mode

Does it idle fine?

Could be as 'simple' as the solenoid itself. Solenoids do break... but, I guess, there might be a solenoid code for that instead. Does the CEL come on when the car starts or shortly there after? Sometimes try clearing the code, and check if it comes back.

If it's the solenoid try putting a 12v source to it and see if the engine bogs down a little cause it's kinda hard for vtec to engage at idle... Thats another good way to check or when the car is off check to hear if you can hear it go click... Once again with a 12v source
