Strange Engine Noises - 2000 Civic Si

So let me start by saying that I know little to nothing about the mechanics of a car, so if this is a simple problem I apologize in advance. I didn't want to resort to posting something like this, but after doing a lot of internet research I haven't really been able to narrow down the problem, but I do have a feeling that is either the timing belt or alternator.

My car is a 2000 civic si, with just under 280000 km... as far as I know the belt has never been replaced (it hasn't always been my car, it went through both of my older brothers first) The noise kind of started slowly, where I would sometimes notice it while driving but I didn't really think anything of it because it would go away quickly. Now the noise is there just about every time I start the car, it usually goes away once I start driving but sometimes it doesn't and it can sometimes be there throughout a whole trip.

Here are a couple videos of the car... the first one is in my parking garage (so its dark as *****, and there is somewhat of an echo) the second one was taken outside, so its a little more accurate sound-wise. In both the videos the sound for the most part stops, but you can still hear it a little.

video 1: YouTube - Strange Car noises 1

Video 2: YouTube - Strange Car Noises 2

Sometimes theres a bit of a rattling/knocking noise that you can't really hear in these videos, but I guess its better than nothing.

Anyone know wtf is wrong here? thanks in advance!

That just sounds bad in general. It could be any number of things with 280000 on the car.

Yeah, I know it doesn't sound good at all... but the thing that gets me is that the car drives like there is absolutely nothing wrong with it - and the noise can sometimes go away where it can't be heard at all.

When was the water pump changed.

Take your Valve cover off, and check the tension of your timing belt. Push it in, you shouldn't get more than 1/2" movement out of a fresh belt... Be very very careful with this, because if it is a water pump, it's at its extreme limit about to give out.

I could be wrong, probably am, but check your tension and all that good stuff, check for fluid leaks. Moreover Rad coolant.

It does make a lot of noise, compair it to other youtube videos on spun bearings(not wheel bearings).

s Stop driving your car or it will stop somewhere unexpected. It's one of the pulleys for your timing belt of the alternator either way it wont last much longer like that and it will cost you alot more if it breakes when you are driving take it to a mechanic and have it repaired it could cost you any where from 300 to 700 depending on what pully need replacing .

Take off your a/c belt.

Check if the noise is still there.

i first thought it could be a seized tensioner bearing or a crapped out A/C compressor...either way, take to Zeeman and chris_v2...they know there stuff.

That is one messed up noise.

you need to get a general idea of where the sound is coming from.

At first it sounds like a rattle as if something is loose inside.

You mentioned it sometimes goes away while driving.. Again very hard to diagnose through a video.. Sometimes odd sounds that go away while driving can the bearings for the water pump, which you don't know for sure if or when it was ever changed.

From those 2 vids, i heard more than one noise. Seems like you need a valve adjustment and some belt is whining.

just bring it to a mechanic. you need to fix it no matter what anyway. And if you're not mechanically inclined, not like YOU are going to fix it yourself anyway, so might as well let the mechanic do what they're paid for.

UPDATE:

The problem has now been resolved, I kept putting it off due to school/work and trying to drive my car as little as possible. Anyways, I was out with my car today and when I got back in it wouldn't start, a belt had seized... turns out it was the ac compressor belt so I just cut the bitch out now everything works great.

Thanks for the help everyone!
