Spark Plugs

Hey Hey,

Started experiencing some loss of power on my 99 Civic SiR when the RPMs are low. Say I which from 3rd to 4th and the RPMs are around 3500, the car will jerk a bit and feels like its gonna stall. Also the check engine light will flash but than it turns off. I had a shop scan it but no codes come up.
If I drive the car more aggressively and switch gears at 4500-5000 RPM, than the car is fine.

Im running bosch spark plugs and it was recommend that I change to NGK. You guys think this could be the problem. I dont want to start changing random parts cause it gets expensive.

Any suggestions?

Check the plugs before you replace them. Pull them out and see the colour.
Check your wires, cap and rotor.

Brand name of the plugs won't make a difference. As long as they're the right type for the car, they'll be fine.

How does the car/engine sound? Does it sound like a misfire? Look at the wires, are they cracked? Visible arcing? Lightly spray the wires with water and see if they arc.

Do you have any engine mods?

what gas are you using? whenever i used 87 in my b16 the same thing happened...at low rpm under load the cel would pop on and the car would run like crap (no wonder). put in 92 and i was fine....you are using cheap gas correct?

No, I am using 92 so that cant be the problem.
The engine runs great besides that, it only has 125,000km on it. The only mod I have is an short ram intake.

There are no visible cracks in the spark plug wires. Im gonna spray some water today to see if they arc.

I ordered some spark plugs yesterday through my buddies shop. $16 per spark plug for platniums, what a rip off. If those dont work I'll just return them and try new wires.

So I tested the wires for any visible arcing, and they seem fine. On the outside the wires are perfect with no cracks at all. So im guessing its either my spark plugs or the cap. We'll find out later today when I put in new spark plugs.

bosch plugs are known to cause problems in imports doesnt matter if there new or used. My buddy had a set of bosch platinums and it still ran worse then his old gummed up plugs, just put in a set of NGK V-powers 16-20$ for 4.

it was definately those ****ty Bosch platinums. My mechanic said the same thing that they dont work well on imports. I spent the $70 on new NGK platinums today and its like night and day. The car runs amazing, feel like I just put in a turbo, hahah.

$70 for spark plugs!?!?!?!?!?!

That literally would've bought you 4+ sets of 4 of the NGK v-power copper cores. I use them in all the cars i tune/build, from 175whp n/a GSR to 500whp turbo setup. I like the copper cores the best, but i like the non-resistor race type for the higher whp cars personally.

BKR6E-11 is what you need for a DOHC VTEC honda engine. Hell, i've used those plugs in pretty much all d-series (if boosted), b-series and h-series engines. They can be found at pretty much any canadian tire or part source, or local part store and are like literally $6 for a pack of 2.

Oh well, at least the problem is fixed now, and next time you change the plugs, just remember to grab copper plugs.
